Erie Otters News Release

Erie, Pennsylvania - A midweek battle at home would pit Midwest Division foes of the Owen Sound Attack and the Erie Otters against each other. After four-straight losses to kick off 2023, the Erie Otters would hope to buck the trend behind interim head coaches Vince Laise and Wes Wolfe. Erie would come out in the first game of a three-game weekend set with goaltender Nolan Lalonde in net, looking to pick up their second win of the season against the Attack. The last time the two teams met at the EIA, each team picked up a win in a split series.

A high-energy start for the Erie Otters would see the team playing a tight game against Owen Sound to start. As penalty troubles started to afflict Erie, Owen Sound would take advantage on back-to-back opportunities. During a four-on-three opportunity, leading-scorer Colby Barlow (27) would grab the game's first goal just before the halfway mark of the first. 83 seconds later, on a five-on-four power play, Matthew Papais (12) would strike to make it a 2-0 lead. A final goal for the period would come from Servac Petrovksy (16) with exactly five minutes remaining. Erie would trail 3-0 after one, with a 13-9 shots advantage for the Attack.

The second period would start off where the first left off, as Deni Goure (18) would strike for the Attack's fourth just 1:27 into the new frame. After trailing in shots 5-0 to start period two, Erie would take control of the remainder of the middle frame as they'd outshoot Owen Sound 11-6 down the stretch. Erie would finally be rewarded for its efforts, as Taeo Artichuk (4) would score his second goal of 2023 to make it a 4-1 game. Just under five minutes later, Erie's comeback pursuits would continue courtesy of Liam Gilmartin and Sam Alfano (9) from one knee. Erie would cut it down to a two-goal game, 4-2. After 40, Erie would trail in shots 24-20, but have a game.

Erie would pick up right where the second period left off, as Malcolm Spence (8) would make it a one-goal game just :20 into the third. The Otter comeback would be completed near the halfway mark of the third period, as Nathan Sauder (2) would strike from the high slot to squeak one into the back of the net. Erie would go from down 4-0 to a 4-4 game in just over a period. The jubilation wouldn't last long, as Cedrick Guindon (14) would score just 73 seconds later to give Owen Sound a 5-4 advantage. With the net empty in the Otters offensive end late in the game, Carey Terrance (16) would fire a backhander through the five-hole to give Erie a 5-5 game, which would eventually force overtime. Erie and Owen Sound would trade blows in OT, but a late goal off an opportune bounce would see Ethan Burroughs (14) be the game's OT hero. Owen Sound downs Erie, 6-5 in extra time.

Despite the loss, the Erie Otters would earn their first point of 2023 but fall in OT for the first time this season. Erie's homestand continues on Saturday night as the team hosts the Oshawa Generals for the first time since February 15, 2020. Erie will close out the weekend on Monday, January 16 as the Mississauga Steelheads come to town for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
