Windsor Spitfires News Release
The Spitfires took down the number one team in the OHL with a huge 5-3 victory over the 67s on Thursday night.
In the first period, the Spitfires came out on fire. They only fired 9 shots through the 20 minutes however they picked their spots and scored 3 goals straight. To kick off the scoring, Greentree got the puck to Cristoforo, and he fired a pass towards the net that Maillet tipped in past the goaltender. It was Maillet's 11th of the season. Just two and a half minutes later, Miedema scored his 9th of the season on a similar play. Maggio and Morneau had the assists on the goal. With 3 minutes to play in the period, the Spitfires were shorthanded but that did not matter as Maggio stole the puck off a 67s defender at their blueline and walked in and sniped his 15th of the season. The 67s would get one back with 35 seconds left in the period. Ottawa also had 9 shots through 20 minutes.
In the second period, the tempo of the game cooled down but both teams traded chances. The Spitfires were able to score a 4th on the powerplay just 7 minutes into the period. Smith got the puck to Christopoulos and his shot was stopped but Peer picked up the rebound and scored his 13th of the season.
In the third period, the 67s tried to mount a comeback but to no avail. Boucher scored just 2 minutes into the period to make it a 4-2 game. The Spitfires would respond just 3 minutes later. Christopoulos scored his 19th of the season from Peer and Smith to make it 5-2. The 67s would score at the 11-minute mark to make it a 5-3 game and the Spitfires would hold on to a big victory.
The Spitfires are back in action on Friday in Erie for a 7:00pm puck drop and then again on Saturday in Hamilton for a 4pm puck drop.
