Saginaw Spirit News Release

THIS WEEK IN SPIRIT HOCKEY:

On Friday night, the Saginaw Spirit (29-26-8-0) traveled to Guelph for a matchup against the Storm (28-27-5-4) for the initial contest of a lengthy road trip. In the first period, Marcus Crawford provided the Spirit with a 1-0 lead as he flung the puck into the Storm net off the skate of Isaac Ratcliffe. Spirit netminder Evan Cormier looked sharp and brought the club into the third period with a 1-0 lead. Cormier remained stout and formed an impenetrable wall with several key saves in the final 20 minutes. With the Storm netminder pulled, Blade Jenkins reached the 20-goal benchmark and provided an insurance goal on the night. Guelph pulled their goalie once more as Mason Kohn buried an empty net goal to give the Spirit a 3-0 victory.

On Saturday night, the Saginaw Spirit (29-27-8-0) continued their road trip this weekend as they traveled to Owen Sound to face the Attack (34-22-3-5). This game is the second of three games in three days for the Spirit. Saturday's game marked the second and final meeting between the Spirit and Attack in the regular season. Saginaw Spirit overager Mason Kohn played his 300th game in the OHL against Owen Sound on Saturday. The Attack controlled the puck for the majority of the game and was able to capitalize on two goals in each of the first two periods. The fifth and final goal was scored with fifteen seconds remaining in the game. Unable to establish themselves on offense, the Spirit fell 5-0 against Owen Sound.

On Sunday afternoon, the Saginaw Spirit (29-28-8-0) traveled to Kitchener for the club's third game in as many days, this time facing off against the Rangers (43-20-2-0) for a matinee contest. In the first period, Saginaw quickly quelled its offensive woes from a game prior when Cole Coskey sent a shot from the slot directly into the Rangers net, creating a 1-0 lead that the Spirit held for the duration of the frame. In the second period, Kitchener responded with two rapid goals from Austin McEneny and Adam Mascherin respectively, totaling just 64 seconds between the two scores. In the final frame, the Rangers jumped to a 3-1 lead when Joe Garreffa sent a wrist shot cross-ice and into the Spirit net. Former Ranger Mason Kohn brought the Spirit to within one with a kneeling goal, and a late Spirit charge made for an eventful finish but Kitchener squeaked out a 3-2 victory.
