Spirit Sweep Weekend with Win Over Greyhounds, 5-2

(Saginaw, MI) The Saginaw Spirit swept the weekend with a 5-2 win over the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds Saturday night. Spirit center Kyle Bochek added two goals in the effort. The Spirit are in second place in the OHL Western Conference with 61 points and a record of 29-17-0-3.

Spirit center Kyle Bochek found the net early in the first period at 4:09. Assisting on the play was center Barry Sanderson and defenseman Joe Underwood. The Greyhounds responded with a goal from center Kyle DeCoste at the 6:17 mark. Winger Jordan Nolan was credited for the assist. The Spirit answered back with a powerplay goal at 7:27, scored by defenseman T.J. Brodie (NHL CALGARY FLAMES). Defenseman Nick Crawford (NHL BUFFALO SABRES) and center Chris Chappell assisted on the play, moving the Spirit ahead 2-1.

Brodie (NHL CALGARY FLAMES) fed the puck to center Jack Combs during the second period who then notched a short handed goal for the Spirit at 3:44. Bochek followed suit, adding another shorthanded goal for the Spirit at 18:43 in the second period. Combs and Brodie (NHL CALGARY FLAMES) assisted on the play, ending the period with the Spirit keeping the lead 4-1.

Sault Ste. Marie winger James Livingston added a point for the Greyhounds at 4:03 in the third period with assists on the play coming from defenseman Michael Quesnele and center Matthew Lyall. Winger Jordan Nolan secured the win for the Spirit scoring his first goal of the season at 10:22 in the third period. Center Carson Dubchak and winger Jake Carrick assisted Nolan on the final goal of the game. The Spirit took finished with a win, beating the Greyhounds 5-2.

Saginaw goalie Anthony Peters finished the game with 29 saves and Sault Ste. Marie netminder Cody St. Jacques posted 28 saves.

The Spirit will return to home ice on Friday, February 6th, squaring off against the Belleville Bulls at 7:11 PM.
