Gomes Powers Mississauga to Victory Over Whalers

Plymouth, MI - The Mississauga St. Michael's Majors closed out the weekend tonight on the road with a 7-4 victory over the Plymouth Whalers. Majors forward Jared Gomes produced a five-point night (hatrick and 2 assists) to help drive home the win. Mississauga's record moves to 26-21-1-2 on the season, as a result.

Mississauga was quick to start as Gomes connected only 40 seconds into the 1st period, and then again at 4:41, to put the visitors up 2-0. Cameron Gaunce, Casey Cizikas, David Corrente and Kaspars Daugavins got the assists. Plymouth replied with three goals of their own as Michal Jordan cut the lead in half at 5:36 with help from Joe Gaynor and Kaine Geldart. Ryan Hayes scored at 6:07 and then again at 14:08 to make it 3-2 for the Whalers, while Josh Bemis, A.J. Jenks, Tyler Seguin and Jordan provided the feeds.

The Majors dominated the 2nd period as Jesse Messier produced a marker at 13:24 with assists coming from Mike Pelech and Gomes. Then, Ryan Lopes and Kale Kerbashian each connected at 14:03 and at 17:04 (shorthanded), respectively, to make it 5-3 heading into intermission. Jordan Mayer and Blake Parlett were the helpers.

Lopes opened up the 3rd period with a goal at 11:46, off of feeds from Mayer and Gomes, to get Mississauga ahead 6-3. The home squad was back on the board with a tally coming from Seguin shortly after at 14:44 (unassisted). However, Gomes wired the puck into the Whalers' empty net off of a lone pass from Daugavins with only 52 seconds left in the frame to secure the win for the Majors.

Chris Carrozzi got the start between the pipes and blocked 43 shots for the Majors, while Matt Hackett and Scott Wedgewood combined for 26 saves for the Whalers. Mississauga went 1 for 4 on the power-play, while Plymouth closed out 0 for 4 on the night. The game's three stars were Gomes (1st), Hayes (2nd) and Lopes (3rd).

Mississauga will kick off a home-and-home series when they visit the Peterborough Petes this upcoming Thursday night at 7 p.m. They host the Petes on the following night at 7:30 p.m. and then the Saginaw Spirit on Sunday afternoon (February 8) at 2 p.m. All Majors road games are available via webcast at www.stmichaelsmajors.com.

The Majors present Paint The Rink Pink 2 on February 13 in partnership with the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation for the second consecutive season when they host the Barrie Colts at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds from tickets, sales and in-arena donations of that night will go toward the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Highlights of the evening will include an on-ice pre-game ceremony with Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion. There wil be pink jerseys worn by Majors players, a silent auction in the week following the game, pink paraphernalia and of course, pink ice.
