The Spirit have 70 points and a record of 32-21-2-4, and are in third place in the OHL Western Conference. The fourth place Guelph Storm (67 points) play the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in Sault Ste. Marie tonight (7:00 PM).
The Whalers came out strong with three straight goals for a 3-0 lead. Center Tyler Seguin started the Whalers offensive attack with a goal 3:20 into the game. Center Chris Terry and center Matt Caria assisted on the goal. The second period saw the Whalers extend their lead. Winger Ryan Hayes tallied a goal at the 6:57 mark and Terry followed with a goal at 19:54, moving the score to 3-0. Caria and defenseman Beau Schmitz earned the assists on both goals.
The Spirit mounted a comeback in the third period. Center Jack Combs fought through the Whalers defense to notch an unassisted short handed goal at the 3:39 mark, taking the score to 3-1. It was Combs twenty-eighth goal of the season. The team continued to pressure the Whalers, pulling goalie Edward Pasquale in the final seconds for an extra attacker.
