(Plymouth, MI) The Saginaw Spirit suffered a 4-1 loss to the Plymouth Whalers Sunday afternoon, wrapping up a three game weekend that saw two wins and one loss. The Spirit host the Whalers for a re-match this Wednesday at TheDow Event Center in Saginaw (7:11 PM). The Spirit have 70 points and a record of 32-21-2-4, and are in third place in the OHL Western Conference. The fourth place Guelph Storm (67 points) play the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in Sault Ste. Marie tonight (7:00 PM).

The Whalers came out strong with three straight goals for a 3-0 lead. Center Tyler Seguin started the Whalers offensive attack with a goal 3:20 into the game. Center Chris Terry and center Matt Caria assisted on the goal. The second period saw the Whalers extend their lead. Winger Ryan Hayes tallied a goal at the 6:57 mark and Terry followed with a goal at 19:54, moving the score to 3-0. Caria and defenseman Beau Schmitz earned the assists on both goals.

The Spirit mounted a comeback in the third period. Center Jack Combs fought through the Whalers defense to notch an unassisted short handed goal at the 3:39 mark, taking the score to 3-1. It was Combs twenty-eighth goal of the season. The team continued to pressure the Whalers, pulling goalie Edward Pasquale in the final seconds for an extra attacker. Plymouth stymied the attack however, notching an empty net goal in the final seconds to secure the 4-1 victory. Winger Kaine Geldart notched the empty netter at the 19:23 mark, with winger R.J. Mahalak and Caria assisting. The goal also marked Caria's fourth point of the night.
