Spirit Still Lead Division Despite Loss to Sting

The Saginaw Spirit battled from behind but fell short in a 4-2 loss to the Sarnia Sting at The Dow Event Center Friday Night; The Sting tallied three goals early in the contest and the Spirit fought back to within one goal before being undone by an empty net goal in the final seconds of the game. Vincent Trocheck and Ivan Telegin tallied the two Spirit goals in the effort, which featured a sold out crowd of 5,527 fans. The Spirit lead the OHL West Division with 81 points and a record of 38-21-3-2 and 4 games remaining, with the Windsor Spitfires in second place with 78 points and 4 games remaining and the Plymouth Whalers in third place with 75 points and 4 games remaining.

The Sting controlled the scoring early in the contest, with one goal in the third period and two in the second. Center Alex Galchenyuk notched a power play goal at 19:23 in the first from wingers Tyler Peters and Nail Yakupov, then at 10:10 in the second winger Kale Kerbashian would score from Galchenyuk to make it 2-0. Sting center Garrett Hooey would notch a short hander moments later at the 14:41 mark from winger Craig Hottot to move the score to 3-0 Sarnia.

The Spirit would mount a comeback attempt starting late in the second period, fighting back to within a one goal margin. Center Vincent Trocheck tallied his twenty third goal of the season from winger Brandon Saad at 16:52 in the second period, then at 10:46 in the third period center Ivan Telegin tallied a goal to make it 3-2. Defenseman Brand Walch and winger Josh Shalla assisted on the goal.

The Spirit continued to push, pulling netminder Mavric Parks in the final seconds for an extra attacker. Despite the effort, the Sting were able to notch an insurance goal off of an empty net, coming from Kerbashian at 19:58 with the lone assist going to Hottot.

Spirit netminder Mavric Parks posted 27 saves on 30 shots while Sting goalie Brandon Hope posted 40 saves on 42 shots.
