Spirit Steal Two With A Sell-Out Crowd

July 2, 2005 - Canadian American League (Can-Am)
North Shore Spirit News Release

With the largest crowd of the season on hand, The North Shore Spirit didn't disappoint as they swept a doubleheader with Quebec on Saturday night.

With the sweep, the Spirit improved to 18-16 on the season, while the Capitales fell to 23-12.

The night culminated with a dramatic extra-innings victory in the second game. Vic Davilla singled in the bottom of the ninth inning, scoring Rob Fischer with the game -winning run.

Quebec had jumped out to the early lead, taking a 2-0 advantage in the second inning. Aided by a Marcos Agramonte error, the Capitales pushed the runs across the board with RBI singles from T.J. Shimizu and Buck McNabb.

Quebec picked up three more runs in the third inning. Danny Scalabrini plated two with a double, and the Capitales scored a third run when Davilla couldn't come up with a ground ball for the third out of the inning.

North Shore cut into Quebec's lead with a two-run third inning. Fischer singled home Yuri Sanchez for the first North Shore run and then got himself caught in a rundown to allow Marcos Agramonte to reach the plate as well.

Quebec answered with another run in the fourth, however, as Todd Leathers doubled in the sixth Quebec run of the game. Spirit starting pitcher Ryan McCally was chased from the game, and Peter Soteropoulos entered the game in relief.

The North Shore offense came to life in the fifth inning rallying for four runs off of Quebec starter Coogie Freedman. The Spirit batters came up with the clutch hits when they needed them, doing all of their damage with two outs.

Jose Garcia got things started, scoring Agramonte on an RBI single. The RBI was Garcia's first in a Spirit uniform. Brian Macchi continued the Spirit attack, lacing a two-run triple to left center. Eric Storey followed that shot with an RBI single up the middle to even the score at six.

Neither team could break the deadlock after that, however, and the game went into extra innings. Quebec had the best chance early with runners on first and third and just one out, but Soteropoulos didn't allow any runs to score.

In the end it was the Spirit who capitalized on their chances and came away with the victory.

Mark Comolli (1-3) pitched one scoreless inning to earn the victory for the Spirit, while Min Soo Kim (3-3) suffered the loss for Quebec.

The first game was a pitcher's duel, as both teams were held scoreless through five innings of play.

Agramonte scored the lone run as the Spirit emerged with a 1-0 victory.

Agramonte, 3-3, singled to left with one out in the sixth inning and moved into scoring position with his fourth steal of the game. Fischer picked up an RBI on an infield single, thanks to heads up base running from Agramonte, who scored from second on the play.

Morse (4-1) shut out the Capitales to earn his fourth victory of the season with the complete-game effort, while Julien Tucker (3-1) took the loss.

Morse pitched his way out of a major jam in the fifth inning. Quebec had runners on second and third with just one out, but Morse got a big strikeout on Scalabrini and a groundout from Geoffrey Tomlinson to escape unscathed.

Spirit right fielder Macchi saved a run in the sixth inning, slamming into the wall as he reeled in a deep drive off the bat of Olivier Lepine.

Macchi came through with another run-saving play in the seventh, throwing out pinch-runner Simon Legare at the plate.

The Spirit attendance for the doubleheader was 3,611, the first sellout of the year at the New Fraser Field.
