Spirit Re-Take First in OHL with 2-1 Victory over Attack

(Saginaw, MI) The Saginaw Spirit re-took first place in the OHL in a gritty 2-1 win over Owen Sound in Saginaw Saturday night. The win advances the Spirit record to 19-7-0-1, good for 39 points.

"Tonight was a very honest effort by all of our players," said Spirit Asst. Coach/Asst. GM Shawn Camp. "˜"It was great to see our guys rewarded for their effort."

The two conference rivals battled through two scoreless periods, with the Attack killing three Spirit power plays, and the Spirit killing two from the Attack. Saginaw out shot Owen Sound 27-19 in the first two periods.

Saginaw broke the scoreless deadlock at 9:03 of the third period, on a two-on-one break-away. Spirit forward Tyler Haskins muscled the puck away from an Attack defender at center ice, before feeding linemate Ryan McDonough for the goal. The assist extended Haskins' assist and point streak to 11 games. The assist streak breaks the Spirit team record of a 10 game assist streak, set by Ryan McDonough in 2005-06 and made the score 1-0 Saginaw.

The crowd was still roaring from McDonough's goal when Haskins won the ensuing face-off, and fed newly acquired Spirit forward Ryan O'Marra (NYI 05) for a goal just six seconds later at 9:09 making it 2-0.

Owen Sound took advantage of a power play opportunity at 14:28, to carve the Spirit lead to 2-1. The goal was scored by Attack defenseman Zach McCullough. The Spirit then fought off more than a minute of extra-attacker hockey, when Owen Sound pulled goaltender Scott Bowles to preserve the win.

Spirit goalie Ryan Daniels (OTT 06) stopped 30 shots in the effort, earning the first star of the game.
