Spirit of Healthy Kids Regional Program Winners Announced

PRINCE GEORGE, BC - The Prince George Cougars Hockey Club, in partnership with Northern Health and the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation, are pleased to announce the inaugural winners of the Spirit of Healthy Kids Regional Program.

The Spirit of Healthy Kids (SOHK) Regional Program uses Cougars players as role models and teaches elementary school children the importance of reading, increasing physical activity, practicing healthy behaviors, and showing the spirit of kindness.

"The Spirit of Healthy Kids partnership program is rooted in our northern kids. This innovative program aims to engage our kids, is delivered in the spirit of the whole school, the whole community, and with the hope for positive impacts far into the future," said Petrina Bryant, Northern Health Authority, Regional Nursing Lead for Healthy Schools and Youth.

The program's benefits include healthier students plus prizes of $5,000 and $1,000 for participating schools. Six schools recently participated and completed the Spirit of Healthy Kids Regional Program challenge. The winning schools are:

* W.L. McLeod Elementary School in Vanderhoof has won the top prize. They've won: * $5,000 Spirit of Healthy Kids grant from the Northern Health Authority, for the McLeod Healthy Kids & families school project. * Free tickets to an upcoming Cougars' home game. Saturday, February 15th home game against the Calgary Hitmen. Tickets are FREE for ALL students and teachers (parents and families can purchase extra tickets at a reduced rate).

* Harwin Elementary (Prince George), Valemount Elementary (Valemount), Don Titus Montessori Elementary (Chetwynd), Margaret Ma Murray Community School (Fort. St. John), and Uplands Elementary (Terrace) have each won a $1,000 Spirit of Healthy Kids grant.

"The Cougars are very proud to be able to work shoulder to shoulder with Northern Health and the Spirit of the North, to help make our communities stronger and healthier," commented Cougars' Vice President, Business Andy Beesley. "I know our players enjoy presenting the program, knowing that they are helping to be positive role models to many thousands of young impressionable kids. I'd especially like to congratulate W.L. McLeod Elementary School for winning this challenge, as well as all of the other children from the other schools who participated."

"We are thrilled to see this partnership expand to the area that we serve through our generous donors," said Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation CEO, Judy Neiser. "Our partnership with the Cougars and Northern Health on behalf of these donors is gaining momentum and providing a great platform to understand philanthropy as well as active and healthy living at a young age. It's exciting to see this program grow."
