Spirit Kickoff 2022-23 Season with Opening Night Celebration

Saginaw, Mich. - The Saginaw Spirit kicks off their 21st season in the Great Lakes Bay Region Saturday night when they host the Guelph Storm at 7:05 p.m. at The Dow Event Center.

Tonight's Event:

The home opener puck drop is at 7:05 p.m., and tickets for the game are available at the Saginaw Spirit Store, Dow Event Center Box Office, Saginawspirit.com, or by calling (989) 497-7747.

The Saginaw Spirit will be hosting an Opening Weekend Celebration presented by Covenant HealthCare and Hemlock Semi-Conductor at the Jolt Federal Credit Union Event Park. There will be face painting, Fire Truck display, Helicopter display, balloon twisters, inflatable obstacle courses, mad scientist show, cider, donuts, and much more! The party starts before the game at 4:00 p.m. and will continue until puck drop at 7:05 p.m. After the game, join us for a post-game fireworks celebration!

Scouting the Storm

The Guelph Storm opened the 2022-23 regular season on Friday night with a 5-4 overtime loss to the defending OHL Champion Hamilton Bulldogs.

The game featured a total of 72 minutes in penalties and a total of 13 power plays between the two teams. The Bulldogs scored three powerplay goals, including the game-winning goal from Guelph native Logan Morrison with one second remaining in overtime.

Preseason Action:

In this year's preseason, the Spirit played six games and finished with a record 3-3-0-0. Only one of the games was at the Dow Event Center, in which they bested the Flint Firebirds by a 3-2 score.

Zayne Parekh and Luke McNamara would each get three goals to lead the Spirit in the preseason in that department. 2022 first overall pick Michael Misa earned six assists to lead the club in that category. Goalie Brett Fullerton manned the crease in four of the six games played, posting a 1.69 goals against average (GAA) and .936 save percentage (SV%).

The Storm played six preseason games and went 2-3-0-1. Boston Bruins prospect Matthew Poitras led the team in points and assists, scoring seven points with four assists. Braeden Bowman scored six points, all but one being a goal. Goaltender Jacob Oster would play two full games and a portion of three others, posting a 4.38 GAA and .840 SV%.

Last Season vs. Storm:

Last season, Saginaw and Guelph met five times in the regular season, with the Storm earing a victory in each The Storm went 36-24-5 and finished second in the Midwest division. They were eliminated in the first round in five games by the Soo Greyhounds. The Spirit finished fifth in the West division, posting a 24-43-1 record but missing the playoffs for the first time since the 2016-17 season.
