Washington Spirit News Release
Boyds, Md. - The Washington Spirit will go up against the NWSL Shield winners North Carolina Courage for their final home match of the season at the Maryland SoccerPlex.
The Spirit are still chasing a playoff spot with three games remaining, while the Courage have clinched first place and secured a third consecutive NWSL Shield with 46 points.
The Spirit will be playing their third game in 8 days after falling to the Red Stars in Chicago and drawing with the Dash in Houston. The Sept. 28 game at Maureen Hendricks Field is also Nurses Appreciate Night, sponsored by Adventist Healthcare. The Spirit will be handing out pink wristbands and giving fans the opportunity to win game-worn gear.
The Opposition
The North Carolina Courage have displayed a strong attack this season as they lead the NWSL in goals, assists, shots, and shots on target. The Combination of Lynn Williams, Kristen Hamilton, Debinha, and Crystal Dunn have produced 34 of the Courage's 50 goals this season.
The Courage have also won their last six games by a combined score of 19-2. North Carolina has frustrated teams all season long with strong performances on both ends of the field, which has helped them to lead the league in goal differential with +31. Three of those six wins have come in road games, the longest active road winning streak in the NWSL.
The Spirit
In their last two games, both on the road, the Spirit's only goal belongs to Mallory Pugh, who netted one against Chicago. With playmaker Rose Lavelle re-joining the team after being named to the FIFPRO Women's World XI in Milan, the Spirit attack will look to reignite against the Courage.
Forward Ashley Hatch has been an important part of the Spirit attack, as she has either scored (two) or assisted (one) three of Washington Spirit's last four NWSL goals.
