Spirit Fall to New Jersey after 10

The North Shore Spirit lost to the New Jersey Jackals 6-2 on Tuesday night at the New Fraser Field in Lynn, MA.

It was a pitcher's duel for the beginning of the game. North Shore ace John Kelly pitched seven innings, giving up six hits and striking out seven. New Jersey's Trevor Marcotte fanned five and gave up five hits after pitching six innings.

The Spirit started the scoring in the second inning. Eddie Muth walked and advanced to third on a Fran Riordan double. The next batter, Rob Fischer, reached on an error by the third baseman that scored Muth, putting the Spirit ahead 1-0.

The Jackals retaliated in the fourth, scoring two runs off a Darren Blakely single, a Kevin Grijack triple and a Travis Bailey double.

The Spirit scored again in the sixth inning when Carlos Sepulveda hit a solo homerun over the left field fence. With the score tied 2-2 after six and a half innings of play, Mother Nature struck at the New Fraser Field as the rain came pouring down. There was an hour rain delay, but the game continued.

The two teams remained neck-and-neck until the tenth inning. Chad Bircher (2-6) pitched relief for the Spirit giving up four runs in the tenth. Bircher got the loss for the Spirit, giving up six hits and striking out three. Ben Grezlovski (6-4) picked up the win for New Jersey going three full innings.

New Jersey's John Anderson was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Eddie Muth went 3-4 for the Spirit with an RBI and Fran Riordan was 5-3. The Spirit had 11 hits overall and the Jackals finished with 12.

Jeremy Sugarman (5-1) will take the mound for the Spirit on Saturday and will face New Jersey's Jackson Crowther (7-2). The Spirit are now 15-12 for the second half of the season.

The Spirit play game three against the New Jersey Jackals on Wednesday at 12:00 p.m. at the New Fraser Field.
