FLINT, MI. - The Saginaw Spirit paid a visit to the Dort Federal Event Center for a midweek matchup against their archrival, the Flint Firebirds. The Saginaw Spirit fell to the Flint Firebirds by a score of 4-2 on Wednesday night.
The Spirit found their scoring legs early in the first period, thanks to Saginaw center Kris Bennett. At 1:05 of the first period, Saginaw's Artem Artemov fed a nice pass to Bennett who beat Flint's goaltender Alex Nedeljkovic for his sixth goal of the season. Mike Davies registered the secondary assist on the play. The Flint Firebirds responded with one of their own at 5:47 of the first period, when Josh Wesley beat Saginaw's goaltender Evan Cormier to tie the game at one apiece. Mathieu Henderson and Matyas Kantner were credited with the assists on the play. Cormier stopped 12 of the 13 shots the Firebirds put on the Spirit net. Saginaw registered five shots on Nedeljkovic in the first period.
The score would stand despite multiple chances for Saginaw to surpass Flint. Cormier stood tall on numerous occasions to hold the score until the final moments of the second period. The Spirit put the penalty kill unit to the test for the third time of the night as Chase Stewart was whistled for boarding. On the ensuing power play, Flint's Connor Sills broke the tie to give the Firebirds a 2-1 lead over the Spirit. Shots on goal in the second period favored the Flint Firebirds, 11-10.
The Firebirds would add to their lead on the power play at 9:29 of the third period. Connor Chatham received a pass from Mathieu Henderson and fired a shot top shelf to give the Firebirds a 3-1 lead. The Spirit fought back on the power play and sliced into the Firebirds lead, as Artem Artemov tallied his eighth goal of the season. Matt Kreis registered the lone assist on the play. The Flint Firebirds would record one more tally before the final buzzer sounded. Cullen Mercer capped off the night's scoring at 16:28 of the third period, giving the Firebirds a 4-2 win.
