Saginaw Spirit News Release

On Saturday, September 22nd the Saginaw Spirit traveled to Owen Sound to play the Attack for the Attack home opener. The Attack won their first game 6-1 while the Spirit fell to Guelph the previous night in overtime. Owen Sound got on the board first only four minutes in as Kyle Hope scored on a beautiful pass from Daniel Catenacci to make it 1-0 Attack. The Spirit immediately responded by putting pressure on the Attack goalie Jordan Binnington. While on a Spirit penalty kill a shot from the Attack danced across the goal line but never actually crossed the line and was ruled as no goal. The first Spirit power play occurred nine minutes into the first period as Kurtis Gabriel went to the box. Seconds after Owen Sound gained full strength Kurtis Gabriel, straight out of the penalty box, scored sending the puck past the Saginaw tender. Saginaw hit their stride when they got the two man advantage power play late in the period. Spirit captain Vince Trocheck found the top corner of the goal and scored with a quick wrist shot, helped by Dalton Young and Andrey Alexeev. Cutting the Owen Sound lead in half the period ended 2-1 Attack.

Minutes into the second period Spirit center Jimmy Lodge landed himself a two minute high sticking penalty. Following him, Spirit defensemen Steven Strong received a tripping penalty. With a two man advantage the Attack scored a power play goal as Cameron Brace successfully used a give and go pass from Joe Blandisi making it 3-1. Seconds after the Attack power play they managed to get by Spirit defense again when Holdon Cook scored with help from Kurtis Gabriel. The shots on goal were 17-17 with 7:25 left in the second period and the Attack scored once more making it 5-1. Daniel Catenacci poked one in with the assist going to Cameron Brace. The second period ended with penalties all around while both teams managed to send players to the penalty box frequently throughout the remainder of the period. 4 on 4 Hockey was the name of the game, although leading to no goals for either team even with the extra room. With a score of 5-1 in favor of Owen Sound, the third period ensued.

The penalty trend continued in the third period as the Attack immediately went to a two man advantage power play. Later in the period Garret Ross scored for Saginaw in an attempt to pass the puck, instead it bounced off Attack goalie Binnington and into the back of the net. Assists for Ross' goal awarded to Marcelis Subban and Eric Locke. The rest of the third period was filled with more penalties for both teams, Saginaw being awarded 9 minor penalties throughout the game. The game ended with a score of 5-2 Owen Sound.
