Saginaw Spirit News Release
On Sunday afternoon, the Saginaw Spirit traveled to Plymouth to take on the Whalers. After falling behind 2-0 early in the first period, the Spirit would fight their way back to force the game into overtime, but would fall in a shootout. Scoring for Saginaw was Terry Trafford, Brandon Saad, Sam Povorozniouk, and Josh Shalla.
The Whalers wasted little time jumping on Spirit goaltender Jake Paterson, netting two goals in the first eight minutes of the hockey game off the sticks of Stefan Noesen and Curtis Crombeen to put the Whalers up 2-0. The Spirit would get a goal back before the end of the first period when Terry Trafford scored his sixth goal of the season to make the score 2-1.
Plymouth would score just thirty seconds into the second period. The goal by Jamie Devane once again extended their lead to two goals. Ten minutes later in the period, Spirit captain Brandon Saad scored his 21st goal of the 2011-2012 campaign to get the Spirit back within a goal. Shortly after that, Plymouth would answer with their fourth goal of the game, this time from Danny Vanderwiel. Before the close of the second period, Spirit rookie Sam Povorozniouk scored his second goal of the season, unassisted, to put Saginaw back within a goal heading into the intermission.
The third period saw both teams with early power play opportunities, but it was 11:34 into the period when Saginaw's Josh Shalla would score his 30th goal of the season on the power play to tie the game at 4-4. Shalla's goal would force overtime and with no scoring in the overtime session the game would go to a shootout. In the shootout, Vince Trocheck would score the lone shootout goal for Saginaw, but it would not be enough as Stefan Noesen and Alex Aleardi scored for Plymouth to secure the Whaler victory 5-4.
