Saginaw Spirit News Release
Saginaw travelled to the Kitchener Memorial Auditorium for some Sunday evening hockey to take on the Kitchener Rangers for the Spirit's third road game of the weekend. The Spirit outscored the Rangers to take a 5-4 victory over Kitchener. These two teams last met earlier in the season on home ice for the Spirit at the Dow Event Center, where Saginaw took a 2-1 victory in a shootout decision against Kitchener.
With both teams coming off losses last night the first period started with the Spirit and the Rangers with some solid scoring opportunities. The game picked up at 18:17 of the period when Saginaw's Artem Artemov set up Luke Cairns for a perfect pass to Mitchell Stephens who netted the first goal of the game and put the Spirit on the board 1-0, leading the Rangers. After a penalty free first period both Saginaw and Kitchener finished the first 20 minutes of play with an even 10 shots on goal.
Saginaw's Dylan Sadowy quieted the Kitchener crowd after netting the Spirit's second goal of the game at the 15:40 mark, jumping to a 2-0 lead. Kris Bennett assisted the play. The Kitchener Rangers finally put up a tally in the last minute of play of the period on a slap shot goal by Max Iafrate at 19:15, making it a 2-1 game. Mason Kohn and Curtis Meighan were credited with the assists. The Rangers saw plenty of scoring opportunities but could not beat Saginaw's starting goaltender Jake Paterson. Shots on goal after the second favored Kitchener 17-6.
The Spirit started the third period of play on a penalty kill after Mitchell Stephens took 2 minutes for slashing. The Rangers took advantage of their extra man on the ice and tied up the score 56 seconds into the third period off the stick of Brandon Robinson, with the help of Max Iafrate and Justin Bailey. Saginaw pulled away from Kitchener after Nick Moutrey took a nice pass from Keaton Middleton and put home a great effort at 6:56 of the period, taking a 3-2 lead. Less than a minute later the Spirit found a broken Rangers play, gained control and doubled Saginaw's lead when rookie Tye Felhaber found the back of the net at the 7:48 mark, to go up 4-2 over the Rangers. Assists on the play went to Jimmy Lodge and Nick Moutrey. Kitchener cut into the Saginaw lead midway through the third period when Brandon Robinson put home a give and go pass from Ryan MacInnis at 10:51, making it a 4-3 game. Sean Callaghan headed to the box for Saginaw and Kitchener took the opportunity to tie up the game 4-4 on a power play goal at 17:10 by Frank Hora, with assists coming from Logan Schmidt and Mason Kohn. Kitchener led shots on goal during the third period, outshooting Saginaw 15-9.
Nick Moutrey scored his second goal of the night and put home the game winner in overtime for the Spirit, taking a 5-4 victory of Kitchener. Final shots on goal read 43-28 Kitchener. Saginaw's goaltender Jake Paterson took home his 75th career win and is the all time wins leader in Spirit history after Saginaw defeated the Kitchener Rangers on Sunday evening.
The boys will be back home at the Dow Event Center on Friday, November 14th for Ladies Night against the Windsor Spitfires. Puck is set to drop at 7:11 p.m.
