SAULT STE. MARIE, ON- The Soo Greyhounds didn't wait long to flex their offensive muscles on Saturday Night against the Barrie Colts as the two teams met for the first time this season.
Quickly after the puck dropped, the Hounds got the first goal of the game before scoring three times in the first nine minutes of the game.
"It certainly helped. Anytime you can start on time it's a huge positive when you can get the lead, and play your game. It's really important in hockey" commented Assistant Coach AJ MacLean on how key the start was to the Hounds victory.
"Whenever your on the other end of that and you're chasing that, it's really hard" he continued.
SERGEY TOLCHINSKY sped up the the right wing before beating Colts netminder Ruan Badenhorst to the blocker side on the first shot he faced just sixteen seconds into the game.
BRYAN MOORE (1:30) made it a two-goal cushion for the Hounds as he spun and fired the rebound home before TIM GETTINGER notched his third goal in the past two nights. The winger parked himself in front of the goal and put the puck high off iron behind Badenhorst, on the powerplay, for a 3-0 Greyhound lead at 9:19.
The Hounds had an early shot advantage (7-0) just over four minutes into the game, while following their third goal Colts' Head Coach Dale Hawerchuk used his clubs thirty-second timeout.
With just under eight minutes to go, BRANDON HALVERSON recorded one of his 36-saves on the night turning aside Justin Scott on a breakaway.
Barrie got on the board at 16:08 when Andrew Mangiapane was found alone in front to cut into the Greyhounds lead to 3-1. The goal was a powerplay marker.
DAVID MILLER regained the three goal cushion with 1:03 to go in a period that saw a toal of five goals between the two sides. The Burlington, ON product finished off some slick passing with CHARLEY GRAASKAMP and MICHAEL BUNTING to send the Hounds into the dressing room with a 4-1 lead.
With the Colts getting an early powerplay, the Hounds were hemmed in their own zone for three-quarters of the time before TIM GETTINGER ended it with a Hounds chance and shorthanded breakaway.
GUSTAV BOURAMMAN made it 5-1 at 3:59 ripping a shot from the circle to the side of the Barrie goal for his 4th goal of the year. That spelt the end of the night for Bedenhorst, who after seeing 5 goals against on 15 shots, was replaced by Jordan DeKort.
After Kevin Lebanc cut into the Hounds lead, making it 5-2, the Hounds scored twice more before the period was over.
MICHAEL BUNTING's wrist shot hit off the left shoulder of DeKort and rolled just inside the post and across the line at 10:37 while HAYDEN VERBEEK would notch his 1st-career OHL goal at the 17:01 mark. JEAN DUPUY carried the puck in the zone before sending it back where VERBEEK t'eed up a shot to lift the Hounds to a 7-2 lead through two periods.
The two teams would trade off goals in the third period rounding out the scoring. GABE GUERTLER struck early for the Hounds just sixteen seconds in, with a quick redirection low on DeKort to make it an 8-2 lead.
Adrian Carbonara notched his first goal of the season for the Colts at 5:14 going glove side and making the differential 8-3.
Barrie outshot the Hounds 13-7 in the period, a number of late shots were faced by BRANDON HALVERSON in the final three minutes keeping the game as it stood for the Hounds.
The victory secured the Hounds a sweep of their latest home stand while improving them to 13-5-0-0, good for 26 points, on the season. Their eight goals scored on Saturday Night, marked the highest single game offensive output for the team this season (they have scored seven goals, three times).
"We bared down on our scoring chances, but I think overall in the game I don't think we played as well as we did the past two games. I think we were a bit sloppy, we turned it over a lot in the first two periods (third period was different). First two periods we turned it over but we were on the fortunate side of timely goals" concluded MacLean.
