(Erie, PA) The Saginaw Spirit beat the Erie Otters 5-2 Saturday night, securing their thirteenth consecutive victory over their Western Conference rival. Chris Chappell, Daniel Pachis, Jack Combs and Jordan Szwarz chipped in on the goal scoring with Tyler Murovich notching a goal and two assists. The Spirit have won four of their last five games, and Saturday's victory gives the team 63 points and a record of 30-18-0-3. Saginaw is in third place in the OHL Western Conference.
The Otters got on the scoreboard first thanks to two former Spirit players - center Zack Torquato (NHL DETROIT RED WINGS) tallied a goal at the 10:18 mark, assisted by defenseman Chris Breen and center Justin Hodgman. Torquato was traded to Erie in November 2006 and Breen in October 2008. The Otters would exit the first period with a one goal lead.
The Spirit fired back in the second period. Winger Chris Chappell scored at 10:52 in the second to even the contest, courtesy an assist from center Kyle Bochek. Otters winger Luke Gazdic answered Chappell's goal however, notching a power play marker at 12:46 in the second. Center Ryan O'Reilly and winger Shawn Szydlowski. The Spirit tied up the game 2-2 heading into the third period. Center Tyler Murovich scored a goal at the 18:08 mark, assisted by winger Joe Pleckaitis and center Jack Combs.
Saginaw's momentum carried into the final frame, with center Daniel Pachis scoring at 5:54 in the period to give the Spirit their first lead of the game. Winger Ryan Schnell and center Barry Sanderson assisted on the goal. A goal from Combs at the 15:36 mark provided Saginaw an insurance goal, moving the score to 4-2. Pleckaitis and Murovich assisted on the goalThe Otters cleared their net in the final seconds for an extra attacker but winger Jordan Szwarz broke through for an empty net goal to secure the 5-2 win. Murovich earned his third point of the night with an assist on the game's final goal.
Spirit netminder Edward Pasquale posted 31 saves on 33 shots, while Otters goaltender Jaroslav Janus earned 25 saves on 29 shots.
