Saginaw Spirit News Release
The Saginaw Spirit would head up I-75 on Friday to take on the Soo Greyhounds in the first meeting between the two teams in the 2011-2012 campaign. The Spirit would head home with a 1-0 victory over the Greyhounds on Friday night. Both teams would be held scoreless until the shootout, when Vince Trocheck would score the shootout winner. Tadeas Galansky was the first star of the game with 32 saves in net for Saginaw.
The first period saw Saginaw Spirit goaltender Tadeas Galansky make a couple of huge saves in net for the Spirit, as the Greyhounds would outshoot Saginaw 8-3 in the period.
Both teams would pick up the pace in the second period with more back and forth action testing both goaltenders. The greatest test of the period for the Spirit would come at the 13:41 mark as Terry Trafford would be flagged for tripping just 39 seconds after a Spirit delay of game penalty, giving the Soo a 5 on 3 for over a minute. The Greyhounds would not convert however, as both teams would skate into the second intermission with the score knotted at zero.
The Spirit would outshoot the Greyhounds 9-8 in the third period, but the game stayed scoreless at the end of regulation. The overtime period, like the three previous would not prove decisive either so the game would head to a shootout. Greyhound's forward Corey Durocher would shoot first but Tadeas Galansky would get his pad on the puck to make the save. Garret Ross would then fail to convert Saginaw's first try of the shootout, giving the Soo a chance to take the shootout lead. Nick Cousins would be the next shooter for the Greyhounds but he would lose control of the puck as he went to make a move on Galansky. Vincent Trocheck would shoot next for Saginaw and he would make it count, coming into the zone with a lot of speed, then making a quick move past Jack Campbell, putting the Spirit up 1-0 in the shootout. Galansky would go on to come up big one more time on a night that would see him take the first star honors, stopping Brandon Alderson and sending the Spirit home with a victory.
