Mississauga loses to Frontenacs
November 25, 2011 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release
A late third period collapse hurt the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors dearly on Friday night in Kingston.
The host Frontenacs scored three goals 5:33 apart in the final six minutes of the game, including the game-winner from Ryan Spooner with just 51 seconds remaining to edge the Majors 4-3 in Ontario Hockey League play.
Mississauga (12-10-1-3) led 3-1 after two periods of play but the third period collapse sent the Majors to their second straight loss and dropped their record to 2-7-1-1 in their past 11 games.
"It's a devastating loss when you give up a lead like that late in a game," Mississauga General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "I thought we played really well for most of the game and that's what makes it so much tougher.
"When they got their second goal they seemed to get some life and then they got some bounces and scored two late goals like that. We weren't good enough for 60 minutes to win a game tonight, it's that simple."
Mika Partanen scored his second goal of the year to open the scoring and give the Majors a 1-0 lead at 16:09 of the first period from Riley Brace and Dylan DeMelo. Just under two minutes later Jamie Wise put the Majors up 2-0 with his seventh tally of the season, a power play goal assisted by Eric Diodati, at 18:03 to close out the first period scoring.
The Frontenacs managed to get on the board late in the second period with a goal from Petr Beranek, assisted by Warren Steele and Tyler J. Brown at 15:31 to cut the Majors lead to 2-1. The Majors restored their two goal lead with just 24 seconds remaining in the period with a goal from Brace - his team leading 16th of the year - at 19:36 from Jordan Mayer and Wise. Brace currently sits second in goals scored in the OHL by a left winger. The Majors led the Frontenacs on the shot clock 30-20 through two periods of play.
Kingston's goals came late in the third period but they came often, as Cody Alcock again brought the Frontenacs to within one at 14:36 from Nathan Cull and Michael Moffat to make it a 3-2 game. Brown notched his 15th goal of the campaign just 1:15 later from Ryan Spooner and Conor Stokes to tie the game 3-3 with 4:09 to play.
With less than a minute remaining Spooner scored the game winner, assisted by Jeff Braithwaite at 19:09 to seal the 4-3 victory for the home side.
Kingston outshot Mississauga 16-10 in the final frame, but it was the Majors who led overall by a 40-36 margin.
Igor Bobkov earned the win, making 37 saves in goal for Kingston (7-15-2-1). JP Anderson suffered the loss for the Majors, turning aside 32 shots.
There were just four chances at the man advantage between the clubs, with Kingston going 0-for-1 and Mississauga scoring once in their three opportunities.
The Majors are back in action on Sunday, November 27th when they return home to host the Guelph Storm for the lone time this season at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available at www.ticketmaster.ca or by visiting the Hershey Centre box office.
