
Spirit Clinch West Division Title with 5-0 Victory Over Spitfires

The West Division Champion Saginaw Spirit beat the Windsor Spitfires 5-0 Thursday night at the WFCU Centre of Windsor, clinching their first ever division title courtesy a strong team effort that saw a 41-save shutout from Mavric Parks and a record setting 46th goal of the season from Josh Shalla to break the team's single season goal record. The Spirit have 85 points and a record of 40-21-3-2 with two regular season games remaining.
The scoring started in the first period when defenseman Peter Hermenegildo notched a goal at the 10:41 mark from center Ivan Telegin and winger Jordan Szwarz. Two power play goals in the second frame moved the score to 3-0 Saginaw. Center Vincent Trocheck notched his twenty-fifth of the season at 6:59 from winger Brandon Saad and Hermenegildo then moments later center John McFarland followed with his twenty-fifth at 14:50 from defenseman Ben Chiarot and Trocheck.
The Spirit lead exploded in the third period, with winger Garret Ross scoring at 9:41 from defenseman Ryan O'Connor and winger Josh Shalla. Spirit history continued to be made when Shalla tallied his forty-sixth goal of the season to secure a new single season goal record for the team. The goal came at the 11:30 mark from Chiarot and Telegin.
Spirit goalie Mavric Parks notched 41 saves on 41 shots for his second shutout of the season; Windsor netminder Jack Campbell posted 27 saves on 32 shots in 51:30 minutes of action before being pulled for Michael Nishi who tallied three saves on three shots.
The Spirit wrap up the regular season with home games on Friday, March 18 against the Erie Otters and Saturday, March 19 against the Windsor Spitfires. Both games take place at The Dow Event Center of Saginaw at 7:11 PM.
