Spirit Chase Win Record Saturday Night against Guelph

Saginaw, Mich. - The Saginaw Spirit (45-15-1-1) welcome the Guelph Storm (28-26-5-1) to the Dow Event Center on Saturday, March 9th. If the Spirit grab their 46th win of the season, they will have set a new team record for wins in a single season.

It's Hockey for the Homeless night at the Dow Event Center in partnership with the Rescue Ministries of Mid-Michigan. Along with the pregame broomball tournament and Budweiser Red Room festivities, Saginaw's specialty video game jerseys will be auctioned off after the game.

Last Game:

The Saginaw Spirit hosted the Kingston Frontenacs on Friday, March 8th at the Dow Event Center. A goal from Nathan Poole gave Kingston an early lead but a Saginaw goal from Alex Christopoulos late in the first tied the game up at one. An early goal coming from Zayne Parekh gave the Spirit their first lead of the night over the Frontenacs. Owen Beck scored his 33rd goal of the season, extending his position at Saginaw's number one goal scorer. Christopher Thibodeau managed to score another goal for Kingston, but Christopoulos responded, scoring his second goal of the night before the second period ended. Josh Bloom and Nic Sima scored two more goals for Saginaw before Alex Christopoulos finished off the night scoring a hat trick in the final seconds of the game. Nolan Lalonde made 21 saves on 23 shots in Saginaw's 7-2 win.

The Guelph Storm faced the Soo Greyhounds on Friday, March 8th, at the GFL Memorial Gardens. Jack Beck scored the first goal of the night, more than halfway through the second. The Greyhounds would extend their lead in the third with goals coming from Caeden Carlisle and Justin Cloutier. Charlie Paquette scored a last-minute goal for Guelph, but the Storm ultimately lost, 3-1. Brayden Gillespie stopped 19 of 22 shots on goal for Guelph.

This Season:

The Saginaw Spirit have gone 2-0 so far this season against the Guelph Storm with their last match up being on Sunday, March 3rd at the Sleeman Centre. Hunter Haight scored the first goal of the game. Braeden Bowman scored the first goal for the Storm early in the second, but two goals coming from Jorian Donovan and Alex Christopoulos gave the Spirit a 3-1 lead going into the third. Bowman scored another goal for Guelph but a second goal from Jorian Donovan and an Owen Beck empty netter gave the Saginaw Spirit a 5-2 victory last weekend.

Players to Watch:

Zayne Parekh leads the Spirit in points with 86 (Most among OHL defensemen) and assists with 55 (fourth in the OHL). Parekh also has the most goals for an OHL Blueliner with 31, with Anaheim prospect Rodwin Dionicio behind him at 23. Owen Beck currently leads the team in goals with 33, nine of which have been power play goals. Josh Bloom is currently on a six-game point streak, collecting two goals and five assists. Andrew Oke currently leads Saginaw in all major goaltending categories, with a 3.00 goals-against average (GAA), .889 save percentage (SV%), 25 wins, and one shutout.

Jett Luchanko leads the Storm in points (65) and assists (45) with an additional 20 goals. 28 of Luchanko's assists are power play assists, which is tied for second in the OHL. Braeden Bowman leads the team in goals with 32. His 14 goals on the power play tie him for fifth in the OHL. Brayden Gillespie leads the Storm in all major goaltending categories with one shutout, 3.14 GAA, 0.898 SV%, and 22 wins.

Saginaw currently has ten players tied to the National Hockey League (NHL), including Joey Willis (Nashville), Josh Bloom (Vancouver), Matyas Sapovaliv (Vegas), Hunter Haight (Minnesota), Ethan Hay (Tampa Bay), Owen Beck (Montreal), Jorian Donovan (Ottawa), Braden Haché (Florida), Rodwin Dionicio (Anaheim) and Nolan Lalonde (Columbus, FA).

Guelph has six players tied to the National Hockey League (NHL), including Jake Karabela (Washington), Matthew Poitras (Boston), Vilmer Alriksson (Vancouver), Michael Buchinger (St. Louis), Cam Allen (Washington) and Chandler Romeo (Ottawa).
