
Spirit avoid sweep with 4-2 win

Little Falls, NJ- The New Jersey Jackals failed to complete the three-game sweep of the North Shore Spirit, by falling 4-2.
The Spirit forced the Jackals to come from behind early on in the game. In the top of the first, Nelson Teilon reached on a Wilton Veras error. He advanced to second. With two outs, Joe Hastings singled, giving the Spirit an early one run advantage.
New Jersey would tie up the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth. With runners at the corners and two outs, Aaron Dean unleashed a wild pitch, allowing Craig Conway to cross home plate.
In the top of the third, a pair of RBI singles by Vic Davilla and Hastings, made it 3-1 in favor of the Spirit.
A second wild pitch by Aaron Dean, with runners at the corners, scored Wilton Veras, cutting the North Shore lead to 3-2.
An RBI single by Tanner Wootan, in the top of the eighth, extended the Spirit lead to 4-2.
Joel Bennett pitched seven strong innings for the Jackals. He gave up two earned runs on seven hits, while walking two, and striking out ten. He suffered the loss.
Spirit starter Aaron Dean, pitched eight innings of work, in a winning effort. Dean scattered seven hits, walked none, and struck out five. Ryan Bicondoa picked up his league leading 20th save of the season, while pitching a perfect ninth.
For the Jackals, Wilton Veras was 2-4 with a run scored.
Joe Hastings went 2-4, for the Spirit, with two runs driven in.
The New Jersey Jackals hit the road on Friday August 20, 2004, as they travel to Quebec to face Les Capitales for the weekend. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
Playoff tickets are currently on sale for the 2004 season. The Jackals have already clinched a spot, after winning the first half South Division Championship. Their opponent is yet to be determined. The ballclub will be playing at Yogi Berra Stadium on Wednesday, September 8, and Thursday September 9, 2004. Both game times are scheduled for 7:05 p.m. If necessary, a deciding game five will be played on Sunday, September 12, 2004, with a 5:05 p.m. start. Box seats are $11.00 and reserved seats are $9.00. Lawn seats are priced at $6.00, but will only be sold if both box and reserved seats are sold out. No discounts or coupons will be accepted during the playoffs.
The North Essex Chamber of Commerce will host a Meet, Greet and Barbecue business networking event on Wednesday September 1, 2004, at 6 p.m, at Yogi Berra Stadium. The event is prior to the 7:05 p.m. start of a game between the New Jersey Jackals and the Elmira Pioneers. The $30 fee includes a BBQ buffet at Jackals' Park, a ticket to the ballgame, and unlimited draft beer and soda until the seventh inning. New Jersey Jackals' shortstop Chris Rowan eclipsed the team record for homeruns as a member of the ballclub, on Friday, August 7, 2004. Rowan hit his 29th as a member of the Jackals, and 17th of the 2004 season, eclipsing Travis Bailey's record of 28. On Thursday August 12, 2004, Rowan also broke the league record for grand slams in a season. In an 8-5 win over Quebec, Rowan belted his third grand slam of 2004 in the bottom of the eighth inning.
On Tuesday, August 3, 2004, Jackals' starting pitcher Aaron Myers was named the Rawlings Northeast League Player of the Month. Myers went 4-1 in the month of July, with a 1.06 ERA. In 34 innings of work, Myers scattered 29 hits while striking out 38. Also during the month, Myers tossed a complete game, seven inning shutout of the Elmira Pioneers, in which he struck out eleven batters. At the time of the award, Myers was second in the Northeast League in strikeouts with 75.
The game scheduled between the New Jersey Jackals and the Elmira Pioneers on Wednesday, August 4, 2004, was suspended due to rain, entering the bottom of the third inning. New Jersey held a 3-0 lead over Elmira, partially due to a two-run homerun by Jay LaFlair. Because of the rain, the Elmira grounds crew worked till after the scheduled start time to get the field playable. The game did not get underway till after 9:00 p.m. The game will be continued on Wednesday, September 1, 2004, at 5:00 p.m., at Yogi Berra Stadium. The first game will begin in the bottom of the third, and will go a full nine innings. The second contest will be seven innings
