Lowell Spinners News Release
BURLINGTON, VT. - Three Lowell Spinners hit home runs and the bullpen held on in the ninth inning as the Spinners overcame four errors to win their second straight, 7-5, over the Vermont Lake Monsters Sunday evening at Centennial Field.
Lowell (9-8) took advantage of a Lake Monsters miscue to get on the board first. After Bryan Hudson beat out an infield single to lead off the game, a one-out infield single from Sam Travis advanced him to second. It appeared Vermont would escape the inning but a potential Franklin Guzman double play ball went awry when Joe Bennie's throw sailed past the bag, scoring Hudson to give the Spinners a 1-0 lead.
Vermont (7-10) took the lead in the bottom half of the inning on Justin Higley's fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot, to take a 2-1 lead.
The lead was short lived however as the Spinners answered with a run of their own in the top of the second, tying the game on a one-out solo home run by Deiner Lopez.
The Spinners took the lead for good in the third inning, again using the long-ball. After a one-out double by Mauricio Dubon, Sam Travis hit his second home run in three days to give the Spinners a 4-2 lead. Lowell would add to the lead in the fifth inning on their third home run of the night, this time a two-run shot by Guzman, his second of the season, extending the lead to 6-2.
The Lake Monsters would get a run back in the bottom half of the fifth inning and the Spinners would get a run of their own in the ninth, as David Sopilka followed a Mike Meyers lead-off triple with an RBI single, making it a 7-3 game into the bottom of the ninth.
As they had all series long, Vermont made things interesting in the ninth. After two of the first three batters of the inning singled, Ryan Huck followed with a hot shot single to centerfield. Hudson misplayed the ball, scoring a run, and a sacrifice fly on a ball Guzman initially fell down on while tracking, cut the lead to 7-5, but Ellis Jimenez locked down the win, striking out Dayton Alexander to end it.
The Spinners offense drubbed out 14 hits, including the three home runs, en route to victory. It was the first three home run game by the Spinners since July 8, 2011 at Aberdeen. Travis led the way with a three-hit night, his second three-hit game in the series. During the three game set, Travis was 7-for-14 with two home runs and six RBI. Lopez, Guzman and Dubon each added two hit games as every member of the Spinners line-up recorded at least one hit.
Heri Quevedo (1-2, 8.00) picked up the win, settling down after allowing runs in the first two innings to allow three runs on six hits, striking out six, over six innings. Emfember Martinez followed with two scoreless, striking out two, before Jimenez closed out the win.
The New York-Penn League rests Monday on the season's first off-day. The Spinners return to LeLacheur Park Tuesday for a three-game series with the Connecticut Tigers, highlighted by post-game fireworks Thursday night. Jake Drehoff (0-0, 3.77) will get the ball Tuesday evening for a 7:05 first pitch.
