Spikes Welcome Record Crowd To Home Finale
August 30, 2009 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - Fueled by a record walk-up crowd of over 1,600, a record 5,757 fans smashed the attendance record at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the second time in less than two weeks as the State College Spikes played their home finale on Sunday, dropping a 5-3 decision to the Williamsport Crosscutters.
The crowd topped the previous attendance record of 5,708, set just nine days ago when the Spikes welcomed the Brooklyn Cyclones to State College. Sunday's walk-up crowd also set the high water mark for day-of-game sales for the third time this season. Medlar Field at Lubrano Park held five of its ten largest crowds in history, including four Spikes home games and the New York-Penn League All-Star Game, over the course of the 2009 season.
In game action, Brock Holt went 3-for-5 with an RBI triple and two runs scored to pace the offense for State College (34-35), after being named the team's Most Valuable Player in a pre-game ceremony. Kyle McPherson and David Rubinstein also earned year-end honors, picking up the Spikes Pitcher of the Year and Leadership Awards, respectively.
Rubinstein and Aaron Baker each had two hits and a run batted in to aid the Spikes offense, as well. State College outhit Williamsport (38-31), 11-6, in the game, falling for just the second time this year at home when surpassing an opponent' hit total.
Tyler Cox (8-3) took the loss for the Spikes, allowing three unearned runs and four total in six innings of work. Cox yielded four hits and struck out six. The left-hander's win total, a single-season record for any Spikes pitcher, is still tied for second in the league behind the nine of Brooklyn's Mark Cohoon.
Nick Hernandez (7-1) went five innings and allowed two runs on nine hits and a walk to pick up the win for Williamsport. Hernandez also struck out seven in the victory. Luke Wertz (1) earned the save with two scoreless innings to finish the game.
The Crosscutters were also bolstered by an inside-the-park home run by Anthony Hewitt in the fourth inning. The homer was just the second in Medlar Field at Lubrano Park history of that kind after the Spikes' Nathan Southard hit one in 2006.
Monday, the Spikes hit the road to start a season-ending seven-game road trip with the first of two games against the Batavia Muckdogs at Dwyer Stadium. The 7:05 p.m. matchup will feature State College right-hander Phillip Irwin (1-1) going against either right-hander Michael Blazek (4-8) or left-hander Kevin Seigrist (1-0) for Batavia.
Fans can catch all of the action on the Spikes Radio Network and flagship station 3WZ at 95.3 FM starting at 6:50 p.m. with the Spikes GameDay Show live from Dwyer Stadium.
The Spikes' radio broadcast can also be heard worldwide through the "Listen Live" link on StateCollegeSpikes.com, provided by 95.3-3WZ.
