State College Spikes News Release

Williamsport Crosscutters - Philadelphia Phillies (37-31) @ State College Spikes - Pittsburgh Pirates (34-34)

Game #69 / Home Game #38

LHP Tyler Cox (8-2, 4.06) vs. LHP Nick Hernandez (6-1, 2.87)

-SPIKES PLAY HOME FINALE TONIGHT: The State College Spikes mark the end of their 2009 home schedule tonight as they face the Williamsport Crosscutters in a SawBuck Series matchup at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. The Spikes and Crosscutters are tied in the season series, 4-4, and the all-time series, 22-22.

-LAST GAME: A tenacious effort by the Spikes fell just short in a 7-4 loss to the Crosscutters yesterday afternoon at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. After trailing 4-0, the Spikes got to within 5-4 in the sixth inning. However, Williamsport scored runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull away. Aaron Baker went 3-for-5 with his league-leading seventh triple of the year, also setting a Spikes record in the category. Evan Chambers reached base for the ninth game in a row for State College, as well.

-COX TO OPEN AND CLOSE: Left-hander Tyler Cox, who started for the Spikes on Opening Night 2009 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park, gets the honor of starting in the 2009 home finale as well. Cox rebounded from his struggles in that first start to post eight victories, a Spikes record. A ninth win tonight would give the Illinois State product sole possession of the New-York Penn League lead in victories.

-'CUTTERS GO WITH HERNANDEZ: Williamsport left-hander Nick Hernandez starts the last SawBuck Series game of 2009 at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park tonight. Hernandez is making his 14th start of the season, with a win in each of his last five decisions. The Phillies' 12th-round pick in 2009, Hernandez has made three seven-inning starts this year.

-LAST BLAST AT THE BALLPARK: With the home finale, fans will have their last chance to experience all the fun at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in 2009. It's Fan Appreciation Night, with great prizes for fans all evening. Also, the College Student 3-2-1 Special is available, and fans can get pumped for THON Night and Greek Night at the ballpark, too. Plus, it's a Summer-Blast Off Sunday, with a Pre-Game Catch on the Field, Post-Game Kids Run the Bases, and FIREWORKS after the game presented by HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabiliation Hospital.
