NILES, OH - State College Spikes blasted four home runs Sunday night at Eastwood Field in their 10-5 win over the Mahoning Valley Scrapers. Eight of the Spikes' 10 runs were scored on home runs.
The Spikes (13-47) and Scrappers (26-37) played three innings of scoreless baseball to start off the night until Kyle Morgan put a run on the board for the Spikes with a solo home run to right field in the fourth inning. Morgan went 3-for-3 on the night, scored four runs and walked twice. Tonight was Morgan's second consecutive three-hit game.
Andy Vasquez added to the Spikes' lead in the sixth inning with a three-run homer to right field, scoring Morgan and Butch Biela who both walked earlier in the inning. Vasquez did nearly the exact same thing in the eighth inning, with a two-run blast that scored Morgan again who reached base by walking earlier in the inning. Vasquez went 3-for-5 on the night, scoring twice and earning five RBI.
Ciro Rosero contributed a two-run homer of his own in the seventh inning, scoring Matt Payne who walked earlier in the inning.
Spikes' starter Rudy Owens (2-6) allowed only five Scrappers to reach base, pitching five hitless innings to earn the win for the Spikes. Owens struck out four and walked one.
Allen Ponder closed the game with two scoreless innings. Ponder allowed only two hits and struck out three to earn his second save of the year.
The Spikes will try for the series sweep tomorrow as the two teams face off at 7:05 p.m. Righty Wilson Ortiz (0-2) will take the hill for the Spikes against Mahoning Valley's Kaimi Mead (5-6).
