-SPIKES LOOK FOR SECOND WIN VS. SCRAPPERS: The Spikes take on the Mahoning Valley Scrappers tonight in the second game of a three-game series at Eastwood Field. The Spikes took their first win of 2008 against the Scrappers last night, and their first win in Mahoning Valley since 2006. The Scrappers lead the all-time series, 15-11. The Spikes will attempt to win back-to-back road games for the first time this year tonight.
-LAST NIGHT: A stellar State College pitching effort gave the Spikes a 2-1 win to snap an 11-game losing streak and a 15-game road losing streak. Carlos Amaro started and went five shutout innings for the Spikes, followed by 2.1 scoreless innings from Jorge Charry. Alan Knotts finished, and while he gave up one unearned run in the ninth, Knotts shut it down thereafter to get his first save of the year. Kyle Morgan collected three hits and an RBI for the Spikes.
-TONIGHT'S SPIKES STARTER: Southpaw Rudy Owens goes to the hill for State College tonight. Owens makes his 13th appearance and 11th start. Last time out, Owens allowed three runs over three innings to draw the loss against Williamsport. The lefty makes his third straight start on the road after making his first eight at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. Owens has held lefty hitters to a .243 average in the 37 times he has faced them.
-TONIGHT'S SCRAPPERS STARTER: Zachary Putnam makes his first pro start for Mahoning Valley tonight. The Indians' fifth-round pick in this year's draft, Putnam was signed on August 14th, one day before the deadline for signing 2008 draft picks. The right-hander went 9-0 with a 2.58 ERA in 12 starts, earning Big Ten Pitcher of the Year honors and numerous All-America mentions. Putnam is not related to Spikes broadcaster Joe Putnam.
-MORGAN BREAKING OUT: Spikes outfielder Kyle Morgan is on a roll as of late, collecting seven hits in his last 15 at-bats for a .467 average. Morgan got the first three-hit game of his pro career last night, and all three were singles. The left-handed hitter has eight extra-base hits on the year, including his first pro home run, which he hit eight days ago at home.
