State College Spikes News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, PA - The State College Spikes completed the first Sawbuck Series in losing fashion Wednesday night, falling to the Williamsport Crosscutters, 7-3, at Bowman Field.
Spikes' starter Maurice Bankston came out strong, and pitched four innings of one-hit baseball, but earned a no decision on the night.
The Spikes (2-6) jumped ahead in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ciro Rosero scored off a Chris Simmons single to left field. The single marked Simmons's first professional hit.
The Crosscutters (4-5) didn't stay down long, scoring three runs off four hits off Wilson Oritz in the top of the sixth inning. Williamsport added another run in the seventh when Tim Binkoski scored after singling to left field.
Chad Rice led off the eighth inning with a solo home run, his first home run of the season, but it wouldn't be enough to regain the lead for the Spikes. Ciro Rosero led the Spikes' offense, going 3-for-4 at the plate with one RBI and scoring one run. In addition, Chris Simmons and Matt Hague each contributed two hits apiece Wednesday night.
Spikes' pitcher Wilson Ortiz (0-1) took the loss for the Spikes after giving up three runs off four hits in two innings pitched. Justin De Fratus (1-0) walked away with the win for Williamsport. The right-hander went the distance for the Crosscutters, pitching seven innings, giving up only one run off five hits.
The Spikes travel to Auburn to face the Doubledays (Toronto Blue Jays) for a three game series before returning to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. When the team returns home Sunday, June 29th, they will again face the Williamsport Crosscutters (Philadelphia Phillies) in the second round of the Sawbuck Series. Tickets for Sunday's game, as well as the remainder of the 2008 season, are available by calling toll-free at 877-99-SPIKES or online at www.statecollegespikes.com.
