BURLINGTON, VT --- The middle of the Tri-City lineup combined to go 7-for-12 with five runs and five RBI to lead the ValleyCats to an 8-6 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at historic Centennial Field.
Cleanup batter Phil Disher, who entered the game leading the league in home runs (3) and RBI (12), went 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and one RBI. Jonathan Gaston was 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI, while Andrew Simunic went 2-for-3 with one run and three RBI for the ValleyCats.
After Vermont had taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning on a Derek Norris RBI single, Tri-City responded with two runs in the second inning on a pair of sacrifice flies and then added three unearned runs in the third inning for a 5-1 lead. Gaston had an RBI single and Simunic a two-run single in the three-run inning.
The game stayed 5-1 until the seventh inning when the Lake Monsters cut the deficit in half on a two-run double from Steve Souza, but Tri-City got the two runs back in the eighth on a Marques Williams two-run triple.
In the bottom of the eighth the Lake Monsters were able to cut the lead in half once again to 7-5 on a two-run triple from Nick Arata. Disher got one of the runs back in the top of the ninth with an RBI double before Tyler Moore had an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth.
The Lake Monsters had runners on first and third with two outs in the ninth when James Keithley struckout looking to end the game, which took three hours and 49 minutes to complete.
The game featured a combined 391 pitches by the two pitching staffs, including 223 pitches and 11 walks combined for five Tri-City pitchers. Vermont has unable to take advantage of the ValleyCat wildness as they finished with just seven hits and left 12 runners on base for the game.
Pat McCoy (0-2) allowed five runs (two earned) on six hits over five innings with just one walk and eight strikeouts to take the loss for Vermont. Tri-City reliever Jose Duran (1-0) tossed two scoreless innings for the win.
Vermont (3-6) begins a three-game series with the Lowell Spinners at Centennial Field on Thursday night with P.J. Dean getting the start for the Lake Monsters in the 7:05 pm contest.
