State College Spikes News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PA - The State College Spikes took the opening lead of Thursday's game on Roderrick Jones's RBI single, but the Jamestown Jammers responded with a pair of home runs as part of a 13-hit barrage to take an 11-4 victory at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Jones knocked in Junior Sosa with his single to right field in the opening frame to notch his second run batted in with the Spikes (25-40) and give State College a 1-0 lead. Jamestown (32-33) came back with a four-run second inning, however, starting with a two-run double by Eddie Rodriguez. Three batters later, Ryan Goetz delivered a two-run homer to right-center field off of Spikes starter Ryan Hafner (2-5).
State College responded with a run in the third inning as Ashley Poncescored on a double-play ball to draw the Spikes back with two runs. Marquise Cooper added another two-run homer in the fourth inning, though, this one to left field, to make it 6-2, Jammers. The Spikes made inroads in the fourth inning, with Derek Trent doubling to right-center field and Alex Fuselier driving him in with a single to cut the deficit to three.
The Jammers followed by scratching out a single run in every inning from the fifth through the seventh, and adding two more runs in the eighth inning to make it 11-3. Walker Gourley contributed a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning for State College's final run to complete the scoring.
Fuselier collected a pair of hits for the Spikes, while Chris Lashmet rapped his ninth double of the year.
Hafner, who came into the game having allowed only two home runs all year, took the loss after yielding six runs, three of them earned, on six hits and two walks. The right-hander added a strikeout in the effort.
Jamestown starter Helpi Reyes (1-5) picked up his first win of the year after going five innings. Reyes gave up three runs, two of them earned, on six hits, three walks and a hit batsman while striking out four.
Terrence Dayleg went 3-for-5 with an RBI triple and two runs scored for the Jammers, who also took advantage of five State College errors.
Friday, the Spikes welcome the Williamsport Crosscutters (Philadelphia Phillies) to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the opening game of a three-game series. State College will send left-hander Mike Jefferson (2-2) to the mound to start the 7:05 p.m. matchup. Jefferson allowed two runs over five innings in a loss to Auburn on Sunday, but struck out a career-high six batters in the process. Williamsport will go with right-hander Mike Nesseth (3-4), who got the win against the Spikes back on June 18.
