Spikes downed by the doubledays, lose 11-3

AUBURN, NY - The Auburn Doubledays downed the State College Spikes Saturday night, 11-3, in the rubber match of the series.

The Spikes (3-8) jumped ahead early when Ciro Rosero scored on a Matt Payne sacrifice fly, giving the State College the lead in the top of the first inning.

Williamsport didn't wait long to answer back and produced a three-run first inning. Bartolo Nicholas and Chris Demons scored on a Brian Van Kirk two-run home run. The Doubledays produced three-run innings in the third and sixth.

Matt Payne led the Spikes' offense, going 2-for-3 at the plate, scoring one run and earning an RBI Saturday night. Chase d'Arnaud also contributed a multi-hit game for the Spikes, going 2-for-4 on the night.

Emilis Guerrero (1-1) walked away with the loss for the Spikes, after pitching five innings allowing six earned runs on nine hits.

Auburn starter Josh Wells (3-0) earned the win for the Doubledays. The right-hander pitched 5 1/3 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits.

The Spikes return home tomorrow night to face off against the Williamsport Crosscutters. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. with fireworks following the game. The Spikes will host a Kids Clinic from 12-3 p.m. prior to the game. There will also be a Sunday Fun Day Catch on the Field prior to Sunday's all children 14 and under with a ticket to Sunday's game can participate in the free clinic.
