LOS ANGELES - The Los Angeles Sparks Executive Vice President and general manager Penny Toler announced the team has signed Australian center Marianna Tolo. Per team policy, contract details were not disclosed.
Tolo, an international veteran, has played the past three seasons with French league team Tango Borges Basket. Through 17 league games this season, Bourges stands atop the LFB standings at 16-1, with Tolo averaging 10.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. In EuroLeague play, she is averaging 10.3 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists through 12 games played.
"We are excited about the experience, intelligence, toughness and defensive presence that Marianna brings to the Sparks," said Sparks head coach Brian Agler. "Marianna is a very mobile and versatile post player who is developing range on her face-up game and is an excellent passer. She will step in and help us immediately."
Her international play includes four seasons with the WNBL Canberra Capitals (2008 - 2012) where she was a member of the 2009 and 2010 WNBL championship teams. During her second season with the Capitals, she set a league record for most shots blocked in a single game (13) and in 2011, was named to the WNBL All-Star Five.
She started the 2012-13 season playing with Aix En Provence in the Ligue Feminine de Basket before joining Bourges for the 2013-14 season. In 26 games with Pays d'Aix, she averaged 14.2 points and 6.8 rebounds in 26 games
A member of the 2014 Australian National Team, Tolo helped lead the Opals to a bronze medal with her 21 point, 6 rebound performance in the medal clinching game vs. Turkey. She also led the team in scoring (12.2 ppg) and co-led in both rebounds (5.2 rpg) and blocks (1.0 bpg) during the championships.
The Los Angeles Sparks tip-off its 2015 WNBA home schedule on Sunday, June 14 vs. the Seattle Storm at 2:00pm at STAPLES Center. Sparks season and group ticket plans, in all lower-bowl sections of STAPLES Center, are available now by calling 844-GO-SPARKS or visiting LASparks.com.
