Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- The Portland Sea Dogs have taken home both of the Eastern League's weekly awards for the week of May 29th through June 4th, 2006. Sea Dogs' third baseman Chad Spann was selected as the Eastern League Player of the Week and Phil Seibel was chosen as the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week. Major League Baseball Advanced Media (MLBAM) made the selections.
Chad Spann hit a league best .481 (13-27) for the week. He hit three doubles, a triple and a home run. Spann drove in seven and scored eight times. His .778 slugging percentage was the best in the league for the week. Spann raised his average by 29 points to .294 during the week, ranking him 10th in the league in hitting. The 22-year-old was drafted by the Red Sox in the fifth round of the June 2002 draft.
Phil Seibel made two starts for Portland during the week. In his first start against Trenton on May 30th, Seibel received a no-decision, tossing five innings of shutout ball on one hit. In his second start of the week on Sunday against Connecticut, Seibel picked up the win, again tossing five innings of shutout ball on one hit. Seibel passed Josh Beckett and Jon Lester yesterday for the third longest consecutive scoreless inning streak in franchise history at 17.1 innings. Craig Hansen holds the franchise record with 20.1 innings.
Seibel is recovering from Tommy John surgery. He began the year with Single-A Greenville where, the 27 year-old, posted a 2-0 record with a 1.35 ERA in four starts. He joined the Sea Dogs on April 28th. In eight starts for Portland, Seibel has a 2-3 record and a 1.35 ERA. His combined 1.35 ERA is the eighth best in all of Minor League Baseball.
Seibel was acquired by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent. He was originally drafted by the Montreal Expos in the eighth round of the June 2000 draft. Seibel made two appearances with the Boston Red Sox in 2004.
This is the first time the Sea Dogs have swept both awards since May 3-9, 2004 when Chris Smith was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week and John Hattig was selected Eastern League Player of the Week.
The Portland Sea Dogs have won five straight and own the best record (32-22) in the Eastern League's Northern Division, five games ahead of both the Connecticut Defenders (Giants) and New Britain Rock Cats (Twins). The Sea Dogs begin a six game homestand on Tuesday night against the Altoona Curve (Pirates) at 6:00 PM at Hadlock Field.
