Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
(Waldorf, MD) - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (0-2) dropped game two in the series against the York Revolution (2-0) 4-2, in a tightly-contested matchup throughout the night.
The offense got going early on the night, with York striking for one in the top of the first. Jared Mitchell singled on the first pitch of the game, moving up to second on a walk to Alexi Casilla. Two batters later, a flyout to right field allowed Mitchell to move up to third with two outs in the inning. A passed ball during the next at-bat allowed Mitchell to come home, opening the scoring on the night.
The Blue Crabs responded immediately, tying things up in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back walks started the inning, immediately putting Logan Williamson (3-2) in trouble on the mound for York. After two straight flyouts brought Williamson close to escaping the inning, Devon Rodriguez came through with a two-out single to score Strausborger and even things up.
The tie didn't last long, as York put up another run in the top of the second to retake the lead. Brett Marshall (2-2) walked Zach Wilson to start the frame, before two straight groundouts retired the next two hitters. Marshall then walked the next two batters to load the bases, where he would then balk to bring Wilson across to score.
Both pitchers settled down in the next two innings, trading scoreless third and fourth frames. In the top of the fifth, York would pad the lead with two more runs on their total. Mitchell drew his second walk of the game to start the inning, but a fielder's choice put him out at second and put Casilla on at first. Welington Dotel followed that with a two-run homerun, his second long ball of the series, extending the lead to 4-1.
Williamson was lifted after six strong innings, turning the three-run lead over to his bullpen. Devan Watts was first out to the mound, and immediately allowed a single to Angelys Nina to start the bottom of the seventh. Nina moved to second on a groundout from Strausborger, then over to third on a wild pitch. During the next at-bat, Watts missed his catcher again for another wild pitch that would score Nina and cut the deficit to two runs.
A scoreless eighth would follow, sending the 4-2 game into the ninth inning. Cody Eppley worked a 1-2-3 inning for Southern Maryland, before York sent their All-Star closer Grant Sides (S,7) out for the bottom half. Sides picked up two quick strikeouts to start the inning, but a walk and a single extended the inning. A wild pitch then moved Edwin Garcia up to second as the tying run, before Sides picked up his third strikeout to finish off the win for York.
The Blue Crabs return to action Sunday, July 8th for the series finale of the three-game series against the Revolution. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05 P.M. on Sunday at Regency Furniture Stadium.
