Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The South Bend Cubs notched their third consecutive 10-inning win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels with Friday evening's 6-5 triumph at Four Winds Field. South Bend (29-34) holds a 3-1 lead in this six-game series against Cedar Rapids (35-29).
Cedar Rapids scored during the fourth inning for a 1-0 advantage. DaShawn Keirsey Jr. led off with a triple before Jair Camargo singled to drive him home.
Jon Olsen, who took a perfect game bid in the third, was vying for a shutout start when the Cubs surged ahead in bottom of the fifth. D.J. Artis lifted a three-run home run to left-center field that gave South Bend its first lead at 3-1.
The Kernels rallied within the seventh and forced a 3-3 tie. Camargo picked up a leadoff walk and advanced on Michael Helman's single. Max Smith followed with an RBI double, and Daniel Ozoria's run-scoring groundout tied the game.
With two runs of their own during the seventh, the Cubs regained the lead, 5-3. A one-out error allowed Delvin Zinn to get on base. He later scored via Tyler Durna's go-ahead groundout. Nelson Velazquez added a two-out double that doubled the edge.
Down to its last strike, Cedar Rapids leveled the contest in the ninth. Edouard Julien's two-out, two-run homer to right field evened the score at 5-5.
South Bend earned its 6-5 victory within the 10th. A two-out bloop single from Ryan Reynolds helped Artis come home and end the contest.
Jose Albertos (3-0) was the winning pitcher following his scoreless top of the 10th. Zach Featherstone (2-3) ended up with the extra-inning loss.
