Great Lakes Loons News Release
DAYTON, OH - A flash flood watch in southern Ohio made things ominous on Friday night and eventually led to the suspension of game four this week between the Loons and the Dayton Dragons. With two outs, a man on first base, and Justin Yurchak at the plate, the game was put into a rain delay and officially suspended just after 9:00 p.m. EDT with the Loons leading 5-1.
In search of a fifth straight win overall and a sixth straight against the Dragons, the Loons had their work cut out for them going into a Friday matchup against Reds major leaguer Jeff Hoffman. After retiring the first five batters he faced, Hoffman allowed back-to-back home runs to Brandon Lewis (HR, 6) and Joe Vranesh (HR, 5) putting the birds on the board first. Zac Ching (HR, 6) went deep to lead off the 3rd inning and Great Lakes added two more runs before the lighting and rain came. It was the second time this year the Loons hit long balls in consecutive at bats.
Loons starter Bobby Miller made it through three innings allowing one unearned run on three hits with six strikeouts. Six K's for Miller tied his career high. The suspension means Miller's start is most likely over as the Loons expect to turn things over to their bullpen when the game resumes on Saturday at 4:30.
Coverage of the conclusion of Friday nights suspended game will begin with Brad Tunney on ESPN 100.9-FM at 4:25. Saturday's original nine-inning game has been trimmed to seven innings and will start no sooner than 7:00.
The Great Lakes Loons have been the Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers since the team's inception in 2007. Dow Diamond serves as the team's home and also houses the Michigan Baseball Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit public charity, and ESPN 100.9-FM.
