South Bay Lakers News Release
EL SEGUNDO - In their lone preseason game of the 2018-19 season, the South Bay Lakers came away with a convincing 118-89 win over the Northern Arizona Suns on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers (1-0) were led by Issac Bonga, who tallied 19 points and nine rebounds while shooting 8-10 from the free throw line. Wayne McCullough led the Suns (0-1) with 12 points off the bench.
Northern Arizona started the game on a 12-0 run, but the Lakers, aided by Andre Ingram's nine points, recovered to finish the period only down by two, 31-29. The bench pitched in 16 points in the second quarter as the Lakers took a 55-45 lead into the half.
It was more of the same in the third quarter as Bonga scored eight points and the reserves tallied 16 more to build a 20-point lead, 88-68, through three quarters. Marcus Allen scored all of his 11 points off the bench in the fourth quarter to finish it out as the Lakers took home the win.
McCullough's 12 points paced the Suns as Peter Jok (11 points) and Shaquille Thomas (10 points) were the only other Suns to score in double figures. LaQuinton Ross grabbed seven boards to go along with six points and two steals while Derek Cooke Jr. finished with six points while shooting 3-3 from the field.
Bonga did a bit of everything in the win (19 points, nine rebounds, two assists, five steals and two blocks) and Jemerrio Jones posted a double-double (12 points, 12 rebounds) off the bench. Derrick Griffin finished the game with 14 points, while Allen's 11 points rounded out the double-digit scoring for South Bay. Joel Berry II (seven points, eight assists) and Scott Machado (seven points, seven assists) provided solid point guard production and Wes Van Beck added nine points off his own. Moritz Wagner scored five points and grabbed six rebounds in his first game action since this summer.
The South Bay Lakers will open the regular season on Saturday, November 3 against the Stockton Kings at 5:00 PT from the UCLA Health Training Center.
