Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE â The Sacramento River Cats registered the first multi-homer game by a Sounds opponent this season, launching three longballs to record a 7-1 victory over Nashville in the opener of a four-game series on Tuesday evening at Greer Stadium.
Sounds center fielder Tike Redman led off the bottom of the first inning with his 26th triple as a member of the Sounds. The three-bagger, his first of the season, tied him with Nate Chapman, Leo Garcia, and Ted Wilborn for the franchise lead. Redman scored the game's first run on Carlos Rivera's RBI drag bunt up the third-base line with two outs in the inning.
Sacramento quickly grabbed the lead, however, in the top of the second frame. Graham Koonce (3-for-5) blasted a one-out solo homer â his seventh roundtripper of the season â off Sounds starter Matt Guerrier to knot the score before the River Cats took a 2-1 advantage later in the inning on Mike Rose's RBI single. The visitors doubled their lead in the fourth on Luis Lopez's fourth homer of the year, a leadoff solo shot, and an Esteban German run-scoring single.
The River Cats completed their scoring against the Nashville bullpen late in the game. Adam Melhuse touched Shawn Camp for his first home run of the year in the eighth, a solo blast to right-center. Koonce and Lopez (3-for-5) each plated a run in the ninth with an RBI single.
John Barnes went 2-for-4 for the Sounds to log the team's lone multiple-hit effort in the contest. The five Nashville hurlers combined for 10 strikeouts in the losing effort, five by Guerrier.
Sacramento starter Erik Hiljus (3-3) picked up the victory after allowing one run and striking out six batters over 6.0 innings. Guerrier (0-1) absorbed the loss in his first decision of the season after surrendering four runs on eight hits over 3 2/3 frames. The River Cats bullpen shut down the Nashville offense late in the game, retiring the final 10 batters in order.
The Sounds and River Cats meet in the second game of the series tomorrow afternoon in a 3 p.m. matinee tilt at Greer Stadium. Nashville right-hander Ryan Vogelsong (4-2) will face the current Pacific Coast League Pitcher-of-the-Week, right-hander Justin Duchscherer (2-0).
