Nashville Sounds News Release
TACOMA, Wash. -- Jeff Cirillo knocked in three runs and Jamal Strong had three hits to lead the Tacoma Rainiers to a 5-3 victory over the Nashville Sounds on Sunday afternoon at Cheney Stadium in the third game of a four-game series.
The loss, Nashville's fourth in a row and ninth in their last 13 contests, dropped the Sounds' lead in the PCL East to 4 1/2 games as second-place New Orleans defeated Iowa.
Cirillo, in his fifth game of a rehab stint, doubled in the fifth inning and clubbed a three-run homer in the seventh, giving Tacoma a 5-1 lead. Strong doubled twice and produced an RBI single in the fourth inning to snap a 1-1 tie. J.R. Phillips also hit a pair of doubles for the Rainiers, who won for the eighth time in their last nine games.
Tony Alvarez hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning for Nashville, his seventh roundtripper of the year. Bobby Hill went 1-for-4 for the Sounds, logging a double for his first hit as a member of the Pittsburgh Pirates organization.
Dave Doster continued his hot hitting for Nashville, logging his sixth consecutive two-hit contest (2-for-5) to extend his hitting streak to eight games.
Tacoma reliever Emiliano Fruto (1-0) allowed just one hit over four scoreless innings to pick up the win in his first appearance since being promoted from the Class A California League. Allan Simpson struck out the final two batters of the game to notch his first save. Justin Reid (3-7) gave up four runs -- three earned -- and eight hits in five innings to suffer the loss.
The teams wrap up their four-game series with a 2:35 p.m. CDT matinee meeting on Monday afternoon. Left-hander Dave Williams (5-3, 4.98) gets the start for the Sounds. He is slated to face Tacoma right-hander Scott Atchison (5-8, 3.88).
