Portland Beavers News Release

LAS VEGAS - Shane Victorino, Joe Thurston, and Daryle Ward each had two hits and Lindsay Gulin pitched six strong innings, as the Las Vegas 51s defeated the Portland Beavers 2-1 on Sunday afternoon.

The Beavers, who won 11-6 on Saturday night, haven't won back-to-back games since July 26-28 when they took three straight from Fresno.

Despite the loss, Portland remained two games behind Edmonton in the Pacific Coast League's North Division. After one more game at Las Vegas, the Beavers open a five-game series Tuesday night against the Trappers at PGE Park.

Gulin allowed a second-inning solo home run to Xavier Nady, but the ten-game winner shut down the Beavers' offense the rest of the way. Gulin (10-8) scattered 4 hits, walked one and tied his season high with eight strikeouts.

Steve Colyer gave up a two-out ninth inning single to Rich Gomez, but fanned Rico Washington to end the game and record his 20th save.

Mike Bynum limited the 51s to two runs in 5.1 innings, but the left-hander took his tenth loss of the season. He allowed seven hits, walked three and fanned three.

Bynum held Las Vegas (69-58) scoreless through the first five frames, but struggled in the sixth. After Las Vegas loaded the bases with a single, a walk and a fielders' choice, Bynum walked in the trying run. Matt Hampton replaced Bynum and surrendered a sacrifice fly to Rick Bell, giving the 51s a 2-1 lead.

The Beavers (62-67) loaded the bases with two outs in the eighth, but Las Vegas reliever Dave Lee fanned Jason Bay to end the threat.

Rich Gomez went 2-for-4 to lead Portland.

NOTES: Before Sunday's game, Gulin had lost three-straight decisions to the Beavers, dating back to April 14, 2003 ... in the first three games of the Las Vegas series, Portland's bullpen has worked ten scoreless innings.
