NASHVILLE — Matt Guerrier pitched seven strong innings, catcher Brad King swatted a homer for the second straight game, and the Nashville offense collected 10 hits as the Sounds defeated the Iowa Cubs, 7-3, at Greer Stadium on Wednesday afternoon in front of 6,984 fans, including approximately 3,000 children who attended the game on Day Camp Day.

Guerrier (2-5) earned a win in his second consecutive outing after allowing three runs over his seven-inning stint. He struck out four against only one walk.

One would not need to look further down the box score than the top two men in the Sounds' batting order – centerfielder Tike Redman and leftfielder John Barnes – to see the teams' offensive stars in the contest.

Redman went 2-for-3 at the plate with a triple in the third and a double in the fifth off of Cubs starter Matt Bruback (4-7), who took the loss. Barnes went 3-for-4 and plated Redman twice with singles. In the seventh, Redman led off the inning with a walk then promptly stole second and third, his Pacific Coast League-leading 27th and 28th swipes of the year. On the steal of third, catcher Mike Mahoney's throw got past Donny Leon, allowing Redman to score.

In the sixth, the Sounds extended the lead to 5-1 with a pair of runs. Mike Gulan led off the inning with a single. Carlos Rivera roped a double to right and, when rightfielder Trenidad Hubbard's throw went awry, Gulan scored. Rivera scored the second run of the frame, crossing the plate courtesy of a King sacrifice fly.

King, who scored a run in the fifth, added his second home run in as many games in the eighth inning, a solo shot to left field against Cubs reliever Keith Evans.

On Thursday, the Sounds and Cubs will hook up in a doubleheader, starting at 5:00 p.m. at Greer Stadium. Right-hander John Wasdin (6-3, 3.67) will start game one for Nashville against Iowa right-hander Wilton Chavez (5-4, 4.77). In the nightcap, Iowa will start southpaw Steve Smyth (3-5, 5.20) against a Sounds starter to be named later.
