Nashville Sounds News Release
NASHVILLE -- The Nashville Sounds scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning, two coming on a game-ending Marc Kroon wild pitch, to erase a three-run deficit and secure a 4-3 victory over Colorado Springs in the finale of a four-game series on Monday afternoon at Greer Stadium.
Nashville starting pitcher Dave Williams and his counterpart, Sky Sox starter Kevin Jarvis, were on cruise control through the first seven innings, combining to post goose eggs as the score remained deadlocked at zero. Neither team advanced a runner to scoring position until the top of the seventh, when Garrett Atkins and J.D. Closser posted singles one out apart against Williams.
Colorado Springs finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the eighth inning with a pair of runs to take a 2-0 advantage. Elvis Pena plated the game's first run with a one-out RBI single to center that drove in Willie Morales, who opened the frame with a single. Garrett Atkins brought home the second Sky Sox run with a sacrifice fly to left that scored Clint Barmes.
First baseman Carlos Rivera put the Sounds on the board in the bottom of the eighth with his fifth home run of the year, an opposite-field solo shot to left off Jarvis, but the Sky Sox retook their two-run lead in the top of the ninth when Choo Freeman scored on a Morales sacrifice fly to make the score 3-1.
Nashville finally got to Jarvis in the ninth, loading the bases with two down when Andy Abad, Luke Allen, and Chris Truby all drew walks, the final two free passes coming with two down in the frame. Jarvis gave way to Kroon, who issued the Sky Sox's fourth base on balls of the frame to Rivera, which plated Abad as Nashville pulled back within a run at 3-2.
After Keith McDonald fouled off the first pitch of his at-bat from Kroon, the right-hander threw the next offering to the backstop. Allen tied the contest by scoring on the wild pitch and Truby quickly followed him to the plate with the game-winner when Closser's throw back to the dish went awry.
Sounds reliever Willis Roberts (3-2) picked up the victory, while Jarvis (0-2) took a hard-luck loss, allowing all four Nashville runs over 8 2/3 innings in his 116-pitch outing.
Williams turned in a solid no-decision for the Sounds after allowing two runs in his eight innings of work. He threw 74 of his 99 pitches for strikes, walking none while fanning two.
The Sounds continue their homestand on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. when they welcome the Iowa Cubs to town for the clubs' first meeting of the season. The Sounds dominated the 2003 season series between the teams, winning 12 of the 16 contests including seven of eight at Greer Stadium. Nashville holds a 38-26 edge in the all-time PCL series between the clubs.
Left-hander Frank Brooks (2-2) will make a spot start for Nashville and face Iowa right-hander Jon Leicester (5-2) in the series opener.
