Portland Beavers News Release

TUCSON, Ariz. - Freddy Guzman had four hits and Tagg Bozied hit his first home run since returning from the disabled list and drove in five runs to lead the Portland Beavers to a 12-7 victory over the Tucson Sidewinders Sunday night at Tucson Electric Park.

Jose Nieves and J.J. Furmaniak also homered for the Beavers, who tied their season high for runs scored and tallied 15 hits.

The victory gave Portland its first consecutive wins since a three-game winning streak, May 8-10.

The Beavers (24-27) got out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first on a run-scoring single by Bozied and a two-run homer by Nieves, his third of the year. Bozied drove home his second run of the game with a double in the third and Humberto Quintero later added a three-run double in the inning.

An inning later, Bozied's three-run homer--his third of the season--gave Portland a 10-2 lead.

Bozied scored three runs and Guzman, who stole two bases, scored four times

Tucson (28-22) tallied 19 hits in the game, the most the Beavers pitching staff has allowed this season and the most since Salt Lake rattled off 19 hits in a 15-4 win over Portland on June 27, 2003.

Noochie Varner and Craig Ansman, who had a two-run homer in the seventh, led Tucson with three hits apiece.

All eight starting positions players had at least two hits for the Sidewinders.

Portland starter Joey Hamilton was lifted after recording just two outs in the first as he re-aggravated a hamstring injury that forced him out of his last start on May 23. Monday's scheduled starter, Tim Byrdak, filled in with 4.1 innings of relief work to get his first win of the season, despite giving up four runs on nine hits.

Tucson starter Michael Gosling (1-2) gave up 10 runs on 10 hits, raising his season ERA from 4.62 to 7.06

After the game, the Beavers placed Hamilton on the disabled list and added Alfredo Fernandez to the roster from the San Diego Padres extended spring training headquarters in Peoria, Ariz. Fernandez will join the team on Monday and will make his first start above rookie-level Idaho Falls in place of Byrdak.

Fernandez, who signed with the Padres as a non-drafted free agent after the 2001 season, was 0-5 with a 6.25 ERA in 11 starts with Idaho Falls last season, his second professional campaign.

Following his start, he is scheduled to return to Peoria.

The Beavers wrap up their brief road trip against the Sidewinders Monday night at 6:30 p.m.

NOTES: The Beavers have allowed 10 or more hits in 11 of the last 15 games ... the Beavers did not have an error for just the second time in 13 games ... Portland is 7-7 in games decided by five or more runs ... with a solo shot in the fifth inning, Furmaniak now has home runs in five of his last 13 games ... all three of Bozied's home runs this year have come at Tucson.
