Tucson Sidewinders News Release
The Portland Beavers defeated Sunday Tucson 12-7 behind 15 hits. LHP Tim Byrdak, slated to start tomorrow, came in to relieve starter Joey Hamilton in the first and in the process picked up his 1st win of the year. Hamilton left the game due to an apparent hamstring injury. Byrdak went 4.1 innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 9 hits. LHP Michael Gosling took the loss for Tucson giving up 10 spots in both the hit and run columns, and dropped his record to 1-2.
Portland received solid offensive displays from CF Freddy Guzman and 1B Tagg Bozied. Guzman went 4-5, with 4 runs and a 2B, while Bozied had 3 hits, one being his 3rd home run of the year. Bozied also drove in 5 runners on the night. 3B Jose Nieves hit his 3rd bomb of the year with a 2-run shot in the top of the 1st to start the scoring off. He would finish 2-4, with 2 R and 3 RBI's. SS J.J. Furmaniak also left the yard, his 6th of the year.
For Tucson, every starter minus the pitcher had at least 2 hits. LF Andy Green led off the game with a solo shot to left field, his 8th of the season. C Craig Ansman hit a towering 2-run shot to left field in the 7th, his 6th home run of the year. Even LHP Jon Cannon got in on the action when he pinch hit for Gosling in the 4th and added a single up the middle, which raised his average to .462.
The loss dropped Tucson to 28-22 while the win upped the Beaver's record to 24-27. 4,155 fans attended Sunday night and the game ended in 2:52. Tomorrow's probables for the 6:30 PM start will feature Tucson's RHP Lance Cormier (0-0, 0.00) and a Portland starter yet to be announced.
