Knorr placed on disabled list

EDMONTON, AB - The Edmonton Trapper Baseball Club announced four roster moves today. Catcher Randy Knorr has been placed on the seven-day disabled list with a left hip contusion. Catcher Jason Brown has been transferred from Double-A Harrisburg and should be available for today's doubleheader against the Sacramento River Cats. In addition, left-hander Scott Downs has been recalled from Short Season Single-A Vermont and infielder Jorge Toca has been transferred to Harrisburg. Edmonton's roster currently stands at 24 players; 12 pitchers, two catchers, five infielders and five outfielders, plus three players (right-hander Seung Song, infielder Henry Mateo and catcher Randy Knorr) on the disabled list.

Knorr, 35, spent last season with the Trappers batting .304 (96-for-316) with seven home runs and 48 RBI in 88 games. He was hitting .314 (37-for-118) with one home run and 20 RBI in 33 games before being placed on the disabled list. Knorr was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 10th round of the 1986 draft and spent 10 seasons in the Blue Jays organization. He signed as a free agent with the Expos on November 17, 2000 and has been with the Montreal organization for the past four years. The native of San Gabriel, California entered the 2004 campaign with a career .271 (1012-for-3736) average, 110 home runs and 530 RBI in 1087 minor league games and a .226 (153-for-676) average, 24 home runs and 88 RBI in 253 major league games. He was a member of Toronto's back-to-back World Series Championship clubs in 1992 and 1993.

Brown, 30, was acquired by Montreal August 1, 2002 from the Pittsburg Pirates and split last season between Edmonton, Harrisburg and Single-A Brevard County. He was batting .143 (2-for-14) with one home run and one RBI in five games with Harrisburg this season. Brown started his career with Los Angeles, signing as a non-drafted free agent on May 26, 1997. He entered the 2004 season batting .242 (344-for-1419) with 30 home runs and 178 RBI in 443 minor league games.

Downs, 28, was acquired by Montreal in a trade with the Chicago Cubs in exchange for Rondell White, July 31, 2000. He was 4-3, 3.50 (61.2 IP-24 ER) in 10 starts with the Trappers before being sent to Short Season Single-A Vermont on May 27. Downs started his career with the Cubs after being selected in the third round of the 1997 draft. He was then traded to the Minnesota Twins on November 3, 1998 to complete and earlier trade. On May 21, 1999 he and Rick Aguilera were traded to the Cubs in exchange for pitchers Jason Ryan and Kyle Lohse. Downs was 8-9, 4.29 (121.2 IP-58 ER) in 21 starts with the Trappers last season and entered the 2004 campaign with 34-23, 3.37 (532.0 IP-199 ER) in 110 minor league games and 4-4, 5.58 (100.0 IP-62 ER) in 20 major league games.

Toca, 29, was batting .338 (26-for-77) with one home run and 10 RBI in 24 games with the Trappers before being transferred to Harrisburg. He was released in Spring Training by the Pittsburgh Pirates and began the season with the Aguascalientes Rieleros of the Mexican League, where he batted .339 (19-for-56) with five RBI in 16 games. The native of Villa Clara, Cuba spent most of the 2003 season with Triple-A Norfolk, the New York Mets top farm club. Toca was traded to the Pirates on August 22 and was assigned to Triple-A Nashville. He began his minor league career in the Mets farm system after being signed as a non-drafted free agent on September 7, 1998. Toca played in 25 games with the Mets from 1999 through 2001, batting .259 (7-for-27) with five RBI in 25 games. He began the 2004 season with a career .279 (553-for-1979) minor league batting average, 58 home runs and 294 RBI in 537 games.
