Nashville Sounds News Release
The Nashville Sounds dropped the finale of their four-game series and eight-game homestand on Sunday evening at Greer Stadium, falling 4-3 to the Albuquerque Isotopes.
Nashville (35-35) missed several scoring opportunities throughout the game, finishing just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position as they fell back to .500 on the year and four games out of the division lead.
The Sounds scored the first run of the game at the earliest possible point they could when leadoff hitter Tony Alvarez nailed Albuquerque starter Michael Tejera's third pitch over the fence in left-center to give Nashville an early 1-0 lead. The blast was Alvarez's eighth and the Sounds' third leadoff jack of the year.
Two batters later, J.J. Davis doubled down the third-base line to score Luis Figueroa, who had walked, to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Sounds. Davis, who added a second two-bagger later in the contest, has ripped 13 of his 16 hits during his rehab stint for extra bases.
The Isotopes got on the board in the top of the second when Matt Padgett rocked Nashville starter John VanBenschoten's pitch over the right field wall. The solo home run was Padgett's 13th of the year.
In the bottom of the inning, the Sounds padded their early lead when Alvarez â who finished 2-for-3 on the evening â hit an infield single to score Keith McDonald, who had arrived on base after doubling to left. It was the fourth straight game in which the Nashville backstop has recorded a two-bagger.
The Isotopes took over from there, scoring three runs in the next four innings to take a 4-3 lead. Two of the three runs came off solo home runs, including a Chris Aguila jack off Sounds reliever Jim Mann that gave the Isotopes the go-ahead run in the top of the seventh.
Infielder Freddy Sanchez made his 2004 debut, entering the contest at second base in the top of the sixth inning. He went 0-for-1 on the night, popping up to first base in his lone at-bat, but did record a successful sacrifice bunt in his first plate appearance of the season.
Albuquerque reliever Clint Sodowsky (5-1) picked up the win for the Isotopes after tossing a scoreless frame and reliever Mike Neu picked his second save in as many days. Mann (0-2) was charged with the loss for the Sounds after surrendering the game-deciding homer.
The Sounds take tomorrow off before beginning an eight-game road trip on Tuesday in Des Moines, Iowa with the opener of a four-game series with the Cubs. Nashville will continue on to Colorado Springs for a four-game set to complete the trip before returning to Greer Stadium on Thursday, July 1st to host the division-rival New Orleans Zephyrs in a brief three-game homestand.
Left-hander Dave Williams (4-1, 3.52) will start the 7:05 p.m. series opener on Tuesday against the I-Cubs. He is scheduled to face Iowa right-hander Shawn Sedlacek (3-2, 4.37).
