EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey - Fredy Montero scored in his third consecutive game as the Seattle Sounders FC earned a 1-1 draw with the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night at Giants Stadium.
Montero scored his seventh goal of the season in first-half stoppage time. He also fired two shots off the crossbar and post.
Seattle (5-3-7), which out-shot the Red Bulls 16-11, tied for the second game in a row while New York (2-10-4) ended a five-game losing streak.
The Red Bulls got scored first. In the 40th minute Sounders FC defender Tyrone Marshall's clearance caromed off teammate Patrick Ianni to the top of the box. Juan Pablo Angel collected the loose ball, dribbled past Kasey Keller and shot into an open net from 16 yards.
Montero answered in the dying seconds of the half. He stripped New York defender Jeremy Hall in the left corner and cut inside before beating Danny Cepero from 12 yards.
Montero fired five shots altogether. His header from a Sebastien Le Toux corner kick in the 33rd minute was saved off the crossbar by Cepero in the 33rd minute.
Montero had two excellent opportunities in the second half. In the 76th minute Steve Zakuani's shot was batted down by Cepero and Montero slid past the rebound . With five minutes left in regular time, Montero took a throw-in from Sanna Nyassi, beat two defenders on the edge of the box and shot past Cepero, only to see the ball bounce off the left post and back into the hands of the keeper.
Seattle played without two regular starters. Central defender Jhon Kennedy Hurtado was absent from the game, celebrating the birth of his first child, a son born on Friday night. Freddie Ljungberg was a late scratch from the starting lineup after experiencing tightness in his hamstring prior to kickoff.
Sounders FC is in third place in the Western Conference (22 points). It returns home for the next three league games, beginning next Sunday against Colorado on the Xbox Pitch. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. PT. Seattle plays a third round Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup match on July 1 in Portland at 7:00 p.m. PT.
