Seattle Sounders FC News Release
TUKWILA, WASH. - Seattle Sounders FC 2 (7-9-5, 26 points) extended its five-match unbeaten streak, including four consecutive wins, in a resounding 4-1 win over Real Monarchs SLC on Monday evening at Starfire Stadium. The Rave Green recorded four unanswered scores courtesy of braces by forwards Darwin Jones and Myron Samuel. S2 looks to continue its climb up the Western Conference table on Saturday, August 6 at Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 (3:00 p.m. PT / Live-streamed on SoundersFC.com).
S2 began the match on a torrid pace, with the host side peppering Monarchs goalkeeper Eduardo Fernandez with chances early and often. Midfielder Michael Farfan had the most dangerous opportunity in the sixth minute when his attempt barely sailed above the crossbar. Despite the flurry of opportunities, the Rave Green were unable to place one in the back of the net in the opening 30 minutes.
The visitors struck first after successfully springing a counter-attack from their own end. Midfielder Andrew Brody ran behind Seattle's backline, where he latched onto a long-through ball. With two dribbles, Brody evaded a late challenge from defender Nouhou Tolo and slipped the ball into the bottom right corner of the net.
Seattle equalized in the 34th minute on a converted penalty by Samuel. After Tolo's shot was deflected for a corner-kick, Jordan Schweitzer suffered a foul in the 18-yard-box while chasing down the set-piece service. Following the two-handed foul on Schweitzer, Samuel scored from the spot for his second goal of the season.
In the 60th minute, Samuel sent a through-ball from the left flank toward forward Andy Craven, but the ball skipped past the second-year pro. Jones kept with the play from the far side of the field, and buried a hard-struck shot in a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper.
In the final five minutes of play, Samuel and Jones each netted a goal to put the game out of reach. First, Samuel redirected a shot attempt from Schweitzer into the back of the net in the 86th minute. With his back turned to goal, Samuel found the ball in mid-air and delivered a twisting strike for his second score of the night. Five minutes later, forward Carlos Patino dribbled along goal line and sent a short pass to Jones, who had positioned himself in front of the net. Jones pushed a one-touch shot to the far post for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Ezra Hendrickson's side returns to the road against conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Saturday, August 6 (3:00 p.m. PT / Live-streamed on SoundersFC.com), which marks the second meeting of the season between the two sides.
